The University of Leeds, located in Leeds, England, is one of the top public research universities in the UK and one of the world's top 100 universities. It was established in 1904 as the Yorkshire College of Science and leeds School of Medicine, and was chartered by Edward VII.
The University of Leeds is a member of the Red Brick University and the Russell University Group and receives the highest level of research funding from any university in the UK each year. The QS World University Rankings 2021 are ranked 15th in the UK and 91st in the world. Together with the University of York and the University of Sheffield, which are also located in the York area, it forms the "White Rose University Alliance" to cooperate in research and development in the field of high technology. The main part of the university was built in the second half of the 19th century to meet the educational requirements for the development of local science and technology. The main campus covers 98 acres (40 hectares) and is located 1 mile (1.6 km) north of leeds city centre. The campus is a mix of Gothic Revival architecture, Art Deco architecture, brutalist architecture and postmodern architecture. The university's main entrance is on Woodhouse Lane, and the former Woodhouse Cemetery (now St George's Fields) is located on campus.
The university has five libraries with a total collection of 2.78 million volumes. The Brotherton Library, located in the Parkinson's Building, houses books on the arts, social sciences and law. The Edward Boyle Library houses science and engineering books. The Health Sciences Library houses medical books and is located at St. James's University Hospital. Located on the main campus, laidlaw Library began serving first- and second-year students in May 2015.
