Don't look at these names with the word "cat", you really think it has something to do with cats, its full scientific name is called Euston palm civet, in china known as long-jawed cat.
It is one of the members of the Viverridae family of the carnivorous order (Feliformia), there are 33 species in the family Civet cat family, the scientific name literally translates to Chinese almost all of them have "civet cats", when you see "Civet cats" appear in the introduction, do not think of this species as "cats".
In the mainland, the large spotted civet cat, the big civet cat, the little civet cat, the bear civet cat, the mullein cat, and the small toothed cat in the civet family all belong to the first-class protected species, and the coconut cat is a second-level protected animal, which will be slowly introduced to you in the future.
The long-jawed banded cat is the only member of the genus and has an extremely limited range of life, with most of them found in Vietnam, Laos, and southern China with only a small distribution. Experts assessed China's population to be 300 (1998 data), which was photographed in 2016 in the jungle near Vietnam in the DaweiShan Reserve in Yunnan.
The long-jawed banded cat is a medium-sized palm civet with a body length of about 57 cm, a tail of about 40 cm, an entire body length of about 50-60 cm, and a tail length slightly shorter than the body of about 42-55 cm. The size and size are similar to a mixture between domestic cats and ferrets, and weigh about 2 to 3 kg in adulthood.
The fur is moulted every spring, so the color of the fur varies from off-white to pale yellowish brown. There are thick, well-defined black stripes and stripes on the head and body, and black spots on the neck and legs. The tail is thick , two-thirds black at the back , with two transverse spots at the front.
Females usually have pale yellowish lower abdominal coat color, while males have an orange-red coat color and a larger range.
It is very similar to another relative, "Hemigalus derbyanus", which has a very similar appearance, and the biggest difference in appearance to the naked eye is only the spots on the neck and limbs, but in fact its head will be narrower, slenderer and more pointed, with larger ears and a slenderer body. (I also found out when I was about to finish the manuscript that the content written in front of me was all "ribbon palm civet", and I had to re-check the information to write "long jawed belt cat", see the picture below)
They feed mainly on invertebrates like earthworms, with pointed snouts that help them feed on insects, and large black eyes that help them gain better visibility at night.
The known highest known elevation of the long-jawed beliver is 2600 m in the recorded living area, preferring to inhabit lowland and mountainous, moist and evergreen primary forests. Although it inhabits forests and also has the ability to climb, it lives on the ground most of the time.
Not during mating seasons, almost all live alone, females can breed twice a year, the gestation period is about 60 days, and each litter has 1-3 litters. Usually after 8 to 12 days the pups open their eyes and lactate for about 70 days. Due to the lack of understanding, nothing is known about the length of their lifespan.
Because it lived in a small geographical area, it was much smaller in terms of overall numbers than most of its relatives. According to relevant studies, the large-scale decline in the number of long-jawed tanuki began in the early 1990s.
The reason for this is attributed to the explosion of demand for wild meat in cities, with Laos and Vietnam having the highest index of unspecified mammal hunting in the world, and a very high proportion of hunting using projectiles, dogs and traps made from local plant material, resulting in almost no ground mammals or birds larger than rats. There is no evidence of targeted hunting behavior for long-jawed beavers, and most of the hunts are accidental (e.g., traps, traps, dogs).
Habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation have affected the survival of the long-jawed beaver, and the construction of roads, dams, and mines has fragmented habitats, exacerbating the impact of hunting on populations.
In 2000, Vietnam listed the long-jawed banded cat as a vulnerable species, although the development of this species is regulated but not prohibited, and in 2014 Vietnam launched a conservation breeding program, which is still too low for long-term reproduction. The Lao Wildlife Hunting Ordinance of 2008 lists this species as prohibited from hunting
