Shigeo Fukuda

Fukuda Shigeo (1932~2009) is an outstanding representative of the second generation of Contemporary Japanese visual design masters after Japanese graphic design masters such as Yusaku Kamekura, Takashi Kono, and Yoshio Hayakawa, and is known as the "Godfather of Graphic Design" by the Western design community.
Futian has a high reputation and influence in the field of graphic design in the world, and has held many solo exhibitions around the world, including the United States, Europe and Japan, and won many awards such as the Gold Medal of the Warsaw International Poster Biennale, the 9th Japan Arts Festival Award, the First Prize of the 21st Olympic Games International Commemorative Coin Design Competition, the American International Poster Exhibition Award and many other awards.

Post-war Japan itself was in a world environment of Cold War confrontation, and under the support of the United States, it ushered in a period of rapid development in all aspects, including Japanese graphic design. In order to further win the international market, the Japanese design community had to vigorously develop its internationalist, non-Japanese design.

It seems that pandering to international development has always been a tradition of the Japanese nation.

Fukuda's design works are designed based on an international perspective, coupled with his original involvement in manga creation, the works are full of strong humorous characteristics, giving people an impressive visual sense of beauty and artistic expression, and containing a rational sense of order and continuity in the seemingly absurd visual effects.

In 1987, in the poster design of "Fukuda Shigeo Poster Exhibition", Fukuda expressed the state of four different perspectives of the person sitting still in front of the stage in the same picture, using simple lines and surfaces to create space interspersure, and a large area of yellow contrast with the black silhouette of the character, so that the whole picture produced a strong visual effect. This blurring of spatial consciousness has the characteristics of multiple meanings in visual expression.

In a 1975 promotional poster for Keio Department Store in Japan, Fukuda skillfully used the relationship between black and white, plus and minus to explore the principle of trompe l'oeil. In the work, the legs of the white women on the black "bottom" and the legs of the black men on the white "bottom" are repeatedly juxtaposed up and down, and the virtual and real complement each other, creating a simple and interesting effect, which is "inverted at the bottom of the inverted bitmap".

He gives full play to the creative imagination, simplifies and mutates the image in reality, creates an artistic image that is contrary to reality, and extends or turns the meaning under the interaction of positive and negative shapes to achieve the purpose of clearly conveying the information, and the silhouette effect and monochrome print can have a strong impact on human vision to achieve a stimulating and strong artistic effect.

The "F" poster series designed by Fukuda Shigeo, the main picture is the initial "F" of Fukuda's name as the basic type, interspersed with graphic symbols of the author's habitual human face, sitting girl and running animal image, using the principle of trompe l'oeil such as contradictory space and reversal of the bottom of the picture, so that his work is marked with Fukuda's symbol, becoming another representative work in its heterogeneous isomorphism.

Fukuda Shigeo once pointed out: "There can be no excess in the design." His works are concise in picture, highly generalized in image, clear in theme, simple and bright in color, with strong visual impact and profound connotation.

Fukuda Shigeo's 1975 poster "Victory in 1945" adopts a comic-like form of expression, creating a concise and witty graphic language, the poster with high-purity yellow as the background represents a warning meaning, using black to depict a bullet flying back to the barrel of the gun, satirizing the war starter's self-inflicted wounds, the meaning is profound and thought-provoking.

Through the strong contrast of tones, the theme idea is highlighted, giving people a strong visual impact, so that people feel a heavy sense of oppression and the heavy damage caused by the war. The poster design, which commemorates the 30th anniversary of the end of World War II, won the International Graphic Design Award.

Fukuda is familiar with both traditional Japanese and Oriental aesthetic concepts and modern perceptual psychology. His works not only have the characteristics of simplicity, bluntness and light-heartedness in the traditional aesthetic concepts of the East, but also integrate the formal beauty of Western design theory into it.
