The British artist Dan Rawlings has a power, his fascination with nature and its resilience. He broke free from the limitations of artistic skill and created a vision of a world in which human intervention slowly healed and naturally reappeared. Rawlings often uses metal, light and plasma cutters to create his work. He currently lives in Gloucestershire, England.
His artworks on display at the United Nations Biennial//"Short Distance" are a wake-up call... Dan Rawlings uses his art to create an understanding of the interplay between nature and industrialization. His work gives us a glimpse into the future, where nature will sooner or later take back everything in the eternal cycle.
Artist appreciation of art
Perhaps in the not-too-distant future, sculptor Dan Rawlings (formerly) imagined a world in which machinery from the unsustainable energy industry is now a relic of the past, slowly being replaced by nature in a state of decomposition. In his latest sculpture, titled "The Return of the Future," the artist uses his signature plasma-cut style to etch the massive leaf canopy that emerges from the steel shell of a recycled tanker. The work is currently housed in a 19th-century church in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, England.
I like to use sensual objects as a medium, such as old tools and farm tools, but the focus of everyday people is basic and common. Commercialism can distract us or have a goal of our own that we can use to give meaning to our lives. Real experiences are often overlooked.
The really important things in life tend to be pushed and ignored in a hurry, but like wildflowers growing in cracks in the sidewalk, they have incredible persistence; occasionally stopping to admire them brings a lot of hope and positivity.
