Caroline Gel, from Oxfordshire, said her son Oliver had made friends with a caterpillar while playing outdoors last May 17 and was covered with a painful rash.
The mum, 43, said: "Oliver learns caterpillars at school and his class is reading the whole story of the hungry caterpillar. "
"So he went out last week and dragged a caterpillar down a tree. He even built a small house for it. After playing for 30 minutes, the four-year-old began complaining of a "tingling" sensation in his face and mouth.
Her husband had recently mowed the grass, so he thought it might be a grass allergy or something.
Caroline said the next morning, the rash around his face and mouth was particularly severe.
