Rare birds of prey reappear in Dianchi Lake

On May 8, members of the Yunnan Wild Bird Society photographed a painted ibis during a bird survey in the Wetland of Nandianchi Lake in Jinning District, Kunming City, marking the third time that a colorful ibis was recorded in Dianchi Lake after the first discovery of 10 on January 21, 2017.

"This time, like what was found in Jinning Nandianchi National Wetland Park in April 2020, it is a lone bird." According to the member, in the wetland with this colored ibis, there are also black-winged sandpipers, curved-billed sandpipers, small sandpipers, small white herons, cattleback herons and other birds, they rummaging in the lotus pond for food, flying and falling.

Except for the naked face, the painted ibises are feathered, and most of the body feathers are bronze chestnut, slender body, chestnut purple feathers, shining green metallic luster in the sunlight. The Colored Ibis, which has not been observed on the mainland for many years, was declared extinct in China by the Red Book of Endangered Animals, which is less numerous in China than its close relative, the crested ibis, a nationally protected animal. Due to the scarcity of colored ibises, in the 2021 edition of the List of Wild Animals under National Key Protection, the colored ibises have been upgraded from the original national second-level protected animals to national first-level protected animals.

In recent years, the ecological environment of Dianchi Lake has been gradually improved, and the living space of birds has been further expanded in Jinning District, providing a good habitat environment and sufficient food source for wild birds, attracting more and more birds to "punch in" and settle down here.
