The theme of 50 shillings is green energy, mainly around Kenya's wind energy, geothermal energy, solar energy, showing that Kenya has unique resources and potential in the production of clean energy. The design elements mainly involve the Olkaria Geothermal Project and the Lake Turkana Wind Power Station, two major green energy projects.
Olkaria Geothermal Project
Completed in 1981, the Olkaria Geothermal Project was the first geothermal power station in Kenya and the first in Africa. Kenya already gets 38 percent of its electricity from geothermal heat, a higher percentage than any other country. The Olkaria geothermal project has placed Kenya as a global leader in green energy production, Kenya has led the way in geothermal development in Africa, and in six other countries in the Great Rift Valley of East Africa, there are geological features similar to Olkaria. Kenya Power Company already operates 22 geothermal wells in Ethiopia and will soon mine geothermal steam in Djibouti.
Lake Turkana Wind Power Station
The Lake Turkana Wind Power Station, the largest wind farm in Africa, officially opened on July 19, 2019, "The Lake Turkana Project was built in October 2014 and consists of 365 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 850 kilowatts, 600 kilometers from Nairobi. The Lake Turkana project is one of the largest renewable energy projects developed on the african continent in recent years.
