In October 1952, the Battle of Shangganling was fought. Qiu Shaoyun, who was liberated from the Sichuan Army to join the Chinese People's Liberation Army, was ordered to infiltrate the open field in front of the "391" heights of the right wing position of Shangganling on the evening of 11 November, along with more than 500 people in the three battalions where he belonged. In the process of lurking, Qiu Shaoyun was burned by the incendiary bombs blindly fired by the US military and died at the age of 26.

After the battle was over, Qiu Shaoyun initially had only a third-class merit. Why?

Qiu Shaoyun: At the age of 9, his father was killed by a traitor, and his mother died of depression! The fire did not stand still when it burned

Qiu Shaoyun was born in 1926 to a poor family in Tongliang County, Sichuan Province. The family's main source of income was to rely on his father, Qiu Bingrong, to pull a boat for the boat family to obtain some meager income.

When Qiu Shaoyun was 9 years old, the vicious boatman tied Qiu Bingrong to a stone and sank into the river in order not to pay the porters. After Qiu Shaoyun's mother learned of this news, she looked at the four children behind her who were waiting to be fed, both angry and anxious, and soon contracted a serious illness, coupled with years of heavy farm work, and could not get effective medical treatment, and finally died when Qiu Shaoyun was 11 years old.

In order to survive, the young Qiu Shaoyun had to ask for food to survive, so he also received a lot of sneering. Later, Qiu Shaoyun was even arrested and became a Kuomintang army, and was often bullied by adults because of his young age. Who would have thought that the days of being a strong man would be even harder. Qiu Shaoyun was often bullied in the army, because he could not stand the humiliation, he and his companions conspired to escape, and as a result, they were arrested after the escape, and a Sichuan character was tattooed on his back. His fellow countrymen were killed directly by the platoon leader.

In 1948, when the Liberation War entered the most critical moment, Liu Deng's army went all the way south to completely liberate the Sichuan area. The People's Liberation Army was strictly disciplined, and the momentum of liberating China made Qiu Shaoyun see hope and find his own direction in life, so Qiu Shaoyun resolutely joined this team.

Qiu Shaoyun, who joined the ranks of the People's Liberation Army, immediately took part in the military operation of suppressing bandits in the southwest, and in a battle to suppress bandits, he and a fellow villager made up reconnaissance, successfully infiltrated the enemy army, and captured the enemy chieftain alive.

In March 1951, when the Korean War was in full swing, Qiu Shaoyun's troops were incorporated into the Third Corps of the Chinese Volunteer Army and marched to the Korean Battlefield, a heroic unit, and the commander of the corps was General Xu Shiyou.

In October 1952, the Battle of Shangganling began. At that time, if you wanted to win the battle, you had to first blow up the Campyeong Bridge, which was the only way for american reinforcements. But if you want to blow up the Campyeong Bridge, you must first take the 391 Heights. Naturally, the U.S. military naturally understood the importance of Hill 391, and deployed a reinforcement battalion halfway up the hill of Hill 391. It was not only equipped with various light and heavy weapons, but also built a strong underground bunker. If the troops attack strongly, it is very difficult, and it may expose the strategic intention in advance.

On the night of October 11, 1952, after careful deployment, Qiu Shaoyun and his generals began to advance into the highlands in the form of "hiding".

At night, the death-like silence, except for the enemy's duty plane regular strafing, the surrounding area is surprisingly quiet. Qiu Shaoyun's demolition squad was lurking at the front of the lurking area, only 60 meters from the enemy fortifications—inside the enemy's sixth barbed wire fence.

In order not to let the enemy find out, Qiu Shaoyun and the fighters even breathed extremely quietly. The cold of the night was extremely heavy, and Qiu Shaoyun, who already had some colds, had to stuff artemisia grass into his mouth in order not to make a sound from coughing or yawning.

At about 4 p.m., the enemy fired dozens of incendiary bombs from the bunkers, one of which landed on Qiu Shaoyun's side. As the barren grass dried up, it burned up in the face of fire, and the raging fire soon surrounded Qiu Shaoyun. At this time, there was also a ditch next to Qiu Shaoyun, and if he rolled hard, he might roll into the ditch and extinguish the fire on his body. However, this would attract the attention of the enemy army and inflict huge losses on the volunteer soldiers lurking in the grass. For the victory of this battle, Qiu Shaoyun did not move his body from beginning to end, so he endured it, but because of the pain, the fingers of both hands were almost inserted into the soil, and his mouth was close to the ground, as if he wanted to eat the soil in front of him.

The fire continued to burn, his hair was on, and Qiu Shaoyun was motionless in his insistence. The clothes behind him were all on, and Qiu Shaoyun still insisted in pain.

In the eyes of his comrades-in-arms, he was almost burned into a coke.

The comrade-in-arms who witnessed all this later recalled: "I signaled him again and again with my eyes, quickly rolled around, and put out the fire on his body, he ignored me, and buried his head in pain in the pit he dug, and every time the flames shook, his body twitched once, and our hearts tightened." ”

Ma Suiqun recalled: "At first, when I called out to him, I could still see his face clearly, but later his side had turned into a sea of fire, and the smoke was so thick that I couldn't open my eyes." The fire burned on his side for nearly half an hour before it slowed down, and I kept shouting anxiously. He just lay there until the final sacrifice without shouting a word. I watched him die in the fire, and my heart was like a knife..."

At dusk, the volunteers immediately launched a charge, and the ambushed warriors, full of anger, pounced on the enemy in a state of rage.

The shouts of "avenge Qiu Shaoyun" were loud, and in just 30 minutes, the volunteer army annihilated all the enemy and took the 391 heights in one fell swoop.

After the victory, the warriors found Qiu Shaoyun's body, he still maintained a posture close to the ground, his body had been charred, and his hands had cut out of the deep earth pit...

For the safety of his comrades-in-arms and for victory, Qiu Shaoyun sacrificed his life in the most tragic way, at the age of 26.

The Volunteer Army had an ironclad rule that under no circumstances should wounded and sacrificed soldiers be left on the battlefield. Therefore, after Qiu Shaoyun's sacrifice, Han Yuanquan and three other soldiers sacrificed their lives to the enemy's forward position to regain his body, and when they reached the place where Qiu Shaoyun was sacrificed, they were stunned by the picture in front of them.

Zheng Shiwen saw Qiu Shaoyun's body at the scene, his body was all charred, his clothes were almost burned, leaving only a palm-sized fragment, his face was completely different, and his bones were revealed. The only part of his body that wasn't charred was his hands that were stuck in the dirt in pain.

In the moment of grief, the three warriors seized the time to carry the soldier's body on a stretcher and quickly withdrew, but soon encountered the enemy's attack, and the enemy's fire became more and more fierce, and they could only take turns to crawl forward with the soldier's body on their backs.

After much painstaking effort and a rain of bullets from the enemy, they finally moved the soldier's body to the hillside where the comrades were buried at that time.

After the victory in the battle, the 87th Regiment Meritorious Service Committee believed that Qiu Shaoyun should at least be awarded a first-class merit, but in the end they only gave a third-class merit, and they believed that although Qiu Shaoyun sacrificed himself very heroically, according to the "Regulations on Meritorious Service of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army (Draft)", Qiu Shaoyun did not shoot once, did not kill an enemy, nor blew up a bunker.

Zhang Xianyang was very dissatisfied with this assessment, and after thinking about it, Zhang Xianyang decided to personally reflect to the 15th Army the situation of Qiu Shaoyun's evaluation of merit. The chief of the Zhi Division attached great importance to this, and specially sent people to the 87 regiment to understand the situation, and after verifying that there was no mistake, they were also deeply infected by Qiu Shaoyun's spirit, and Deng Hua, Han Xianchu, and Du Ping all agreed to make a first-class meritorious service for Qiu Shaoyun.

In this way, the report on Qiu Shaoyun's meritorious service was sent to General Manager Peng, who asked the secretary as soon as he saw it: "What is the basis for Zhisi's evaluation?" ”

The secretary asked: "Comrade Shiji said that he did not let go of a shot on the battlefield, and it was already the top of the sky to give him a third-class merit rating." ”

Mr. Peng said angrily, "This is the top of the sky? You do this to chill our frontline fighters! ”

On the report, a few big words were issued - granted special merit, Peng Dehuai.

The secretary was immediately dumbfounded when he saw it, and said, "Mr. Peng, this is inappropriate, right?!" ”

Mr. Peng said emphatically: "What is inappropriate, hair!" ”

Talking about the reasons for awarding special merit, General Manager Peng said emotionally that Qiu Shaoyun's iron will is exactly the soul of our army that can win every battle, and it is precisely because of this soul that our army can persist in fighting in an extremely harsh environment and can use inferior equipment to resist the enemy armed to the teeth, which is the spiritual wealth that we should never lose.

On November 6, 1952, the leading organ of the Chinese Volunteer Army posthumously awarded him the special merit.

After that, the party committee of the unit posthumously recognized Qiu Shaoyun as a full member of the Communist Party of China and posthumously awarded him the title of "Model Youth League Member", and the headquarters of the Volunteer Army posthumously awarded Qiu Shaoyun the title of "Hero of the First Class" for his special merits. The DPRK posthumously awarded Qiu Shaoyun the title of "Hero of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea".

Until February 1953, when Chinese people's condolence delegation to Korea came to the Korean battlefield to comfort the volunteer army, Qiu Shaoyun's fourth brother Qiu Shaohua transported the bones of his brother back to the motherland, and after the coffins of the martyrs were welcomed back, the motherland and the people set up a spiritual hall for the martyrs in a square in Shenyang. At the memorial ceremony, the coffin was surrounded by wreaths laid by people from all walks of life in the city and tributes to the heroic deeds of the martyrs.

Seven days after guarding the martyrs' souls, Shenyang City held a solemn memorial meeting for the martyrs. Because the heroic deeds of the martyrs at this time had long been widely praised by the common people, more than 20,000 people in Shenyang spontaneously gathered in the square to deliver funerals for the martyrs during the ceremony.

This is an unprecedented memorial meeting, the square of tens of thousands of people is solemn, and people silently mourn the heroic martyrs amid the sound of mourning. He was later buried in the "Cemetery of the Martyrs of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea" on the northern outskirts of Shenyang.

On May 18, 1953, an article entitled "The Great Warrior Qiu Shaoyun" was published in the People's Daily, which immediately caused strong repercussions at home and abroad.

In the 1980s, the "Guan Splash Township" where Qiu Shaoyun was born was changed to "Shaoyun Township" in order to commemorate his heroic service to the country.

With the passage of time, the scope of "Shaoyun Township" has gradually expanded, and now it has become "Shaoyun Town"!

On September 14, 2009, Qiu Shaoyun was named one of the 100 Chinese that have touched since the founding of New China.

To this day, Qiu Shaoyun's deeds are still sung in the mouths of the next generation, people have not forgotten the hero, he will always live in people's hearts!!!
