The origin of Labor Day
"At the end of the nineteenth century, the pioneers of the international working class fought against the endless exploitation of the capitalists for the conditions of survival. All the laborers united as one, and after arduous struggle, they won the victory at the cost of flesh and blood. "
At that time, in the United States, workers had to work 14 to 16 hours a day, and some even up to 18 hours, but the wages were low. Heavy class oppression provoked great anger among the proletarians. The working class marched into the streets to demonstrate, proposing to the government to improve working and living conditions and shorten working hours.
On May 1, 1886, 350,000 workers in more than 20,000 enterprises in the United States stopped working and took to the streets, held a huge demonstration, and workers of all colors and all kinds of work went on strike together.
Subsequently, workers' protests were held worldwide in response. These events became the precursors of International Workers' Day.
The development of Labor Day
After a bitter and bloody struggle, victory was finally won. To commemorate this workers' movement, on July 14, 1889, the Socialist Congress convened by Marxists from all over the world was solemnly opened in Paris, France. At the congress, the delegates unanimously agreed to make May 1 a common holiday of the international proletariat.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Government Council of the Central People's Government designated May 1 as a statutory Labor Day in December 1949, and the whole country took a day off. On this day of the year, the whole country celebrates, people change into festive costumes, joyfully gather in parks, theaters, squares, participate in various celebration assemblies or cultural and sports entertainment activities, and commend the workers who have made outstanding contributions.
