Martin Ramirez (Martín Ramírez, 1895–1963)

author:Exclusive gardens of Benny Deer

Martín Ramírez (1895–1963) created nearly 300 drawings with extraordinary visual clarity and expressiveness at DeWitt State Hospital in northern California, where he spent the last 15 years of his life. Ramirez is primarily classified as a "Schizophrenic Artist"; this project goes beyond Ramirez's diagnosis of mental illness and takes into account the artistic qualities and value of his work. In this way, Ramirez's works are understood and appreciated – because they are complex, multi-layered drawings. "Martin Ramirez" is the self-taught master's first major retrospective in more than 20 years, featuring around 97 works on paper, accompanied by a full-color catalog.
