The New Balance 2002R may not be the Boston brand's most popular sneaker design, but it helped the century-old institution expand its consumer base.
Recently, a pair of improved versions originally released before 2010 surfaced in pastel tones before the summer. Premium pig suede and high-performance mesh once again play their standard role, with the former covering much of the latter and boasting a deep navy hue. Light blue and brown add a mash-up at the heel, allowing New Balance's upcoming new product to combine spring and fall hues on a single shoe. The sole unit under the foot — borrowed from the New Balance 860v2 — provides the biggest update to the 2002R's last 2002 iteration, while doubling the sneakers is dominated by a two-tone color arrangement: most of the midsole and tread opt for off-white styling, while the gelatinous pods at the back favor a dark blue finish.
