Kyiv (Kyiv, Киев), the capital of Ukraine, is the economic, cultural and political center. It is located in north-central Ukraine, on both sides of the middle reaches of the Dnieper River, and near the confluence of the Pripyat and Cessna rivers, its largest tributary.
Kiev has a history of more than 1,500 years. Founded in the second half of the 5th century, the 9th and 13th centuries were the capital and center of the first Kievan Rus' and is known as the "Mother of Rus' Cities".
At the end of the 19th century, Kiev was revived by the Industrial Revolution of the Russian Empire. After a turbulent period triggered by the Russian Revolution of 1917, Kiev became an important city of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic from 1921 and the capital after 1934. (The capital was Kharkiv from 1917 to 1934).
During World War II, Kiev was ravaged by war, but recovered quickly after the war, becoming the third largest city in the Soviet Union. With the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the independence of Ukraine, Kiev once again became the capital of Ukraine.
On December 26, 2019, it ranked 421st in the 2019 Global Top 500 Cities list.
In the early 1970s, there were 350,000 industrial workers, accounting for about two-fifths of the total number of employees. Kiev is well-transported and a hub for land, water and air transport, with rail and road links to Moscow, Kharkiv, Donbass, Southern Ukraine, the Port of Odessa, Western Ukraine and Poland. The Dnieper has a higher shipping capacity.
The buildings on the streets are full of the atmosphere of the European Renaissance, and they are not inferior to those of Paris and Berlin.
Boryspil Airport has routes to most of the major cities of the CIS, many towns in Ukraine, and countries such as Romania and Bulgaria. The city's cars and trams are easily accessible, carrying more than 2 million passengers a day, as well as underground railways. Kiev is an important industrial, scientific, cultural and educational center in Eastern Europe and home to many high-tech industries, higher education institutions and historic buildings. The city has extensive infrastructure and a highly developed public transport system, such as the Kiev Metro.
