Originally known as Mercedes Justine Kaestner-Varnado (born January 26, 1992) is an American professional wrestler who is currently signed to WWE as a member of the SmackDown brand under the name Sasha Banks, half of the WWE women's team as the team's first dominion and Banks' third reign as doubles champion.

Mercedes Justine Kaestner-Varnado was born on January 26, 1992 in Fairfield, California, in Reo and Judith Varnado. Her father was African-American and her mother was of German descent. Her family moved to various locations, including Minnesota, to find schools and hospitals for her autistic brother, Joshua. They later settled in Boston, Massachusetts, where she began her professional wrestling career. She went to school online and grew up watching all-Japanese women's professional wrestling (AJW).

Banks has previously wrestled on the Independent Tour, most notably Chaos Wrestling, where she won the Chaos Wrestling Women's Championship. She signed with WWE in 2012 and was assigned to the NXT brand. She was promoted to the main squad of WWE in 2015. Her match against Bayley in October 2015 at NXT TakeOver: Respect was the first women's game titled NXT TakeOver, the first hardcore women's game in WWE history and the longest women's game in WWE at the time, with a length of 30 minutes. Their match was named The Best Match of the Year by Professional Wrestling Illustrated (PWI) and Banks was also named Woman of the Year.

Banks went on to host the original women's tournament five times. In 2016, she and Charlotte Flair became the first woman to make headlines at WWE pay-per-view events, the first woman to compete in Hell's Cage, and the first woman to win PWI's Revenge of the Year Award. In 2019, she and her former doubles partner Bailey won the inaugural WWE Women's Doubles Title on a pay-per-view basis in the knockout room. In 2020, she won the SmackDown Women's Championship in the Hell of Cell pay-per-view, making her third WWE Women's Grand Slam Champion and fourth WWE Women's Triple Crown. That year, she was named Wrestler of the Year by Sports Illustrated. At WrestleMania 37, Banks and rival Bianca Belair became the first black woman to make a wrestleMania headline together. She is the third most tweeted about female athletes in 2021.
