Huang Chuanming, 45, has been dealing with traffic lights since the beginning of his police service. In 1999, after graduating from the former Wuhan University of Automotive Technology majoring in electrical technology, he was admitted to the Jiang'an Brigade of the Traffic Management Bureau of the Wuhan Municipal Public Security Bureau, and a year later he was transferred to the Science and Technology Management Office, starting the road of traffic control technology research, and also witnessed the development and change of urban transportation technology.

Traffic lights are an important part of urban traffic, old-fashioned signal light wiring construction trouble, energy consumption, unintelligent, and may also cause the risk of electric shock.

"Once I saw a news on the Internet that a citizen from out of town was hit and killed due to a signal light leakage, which touched me a lot and inspired me to want to reform it all the time." Huang Chuanming recalled.

In July 2018, the first batch of "bus control signal lights" were put into operation at 12 intersections in Wuhan, and these signal lights equipped with Internet of Things technology achieved more efficient and intelligent control.

Huang Chuanming introduced that the new signal light uses 36 volts low-voltage DC power supply, which avoids the hidden danger of electric shock that originally used 220 volts. The use of Internet big data, Internet of Things, CAN bus and other technologies, so that the signal lights in the receiving signal at the same time continuously automatic calibration, countdown bus control drive trigger, not only to prevent external interference, but also to detect early warning, effectively eliminate the traffic lights of a variety of common failures.

"You see, there is only one signal line and one power cord in the entire light pole, which greatly saves costs; the construction time is only 5 hours, and the construction period is shortened by 80%; it also solves the problem of 'flying line into the ground', purifies the road environment, and enhances the image of the city." Huang Chuanming pointed to his heart and liver baby and said proudly.

Looking back at the development process of mainland signal light intelligent control technology, China has spent more than 30 years to complete the development road of more than 80 years abroad, and completed the transformation of technology in this field from scratch and from weak to strong. Huang Chuanming has researched in the field of signal control and application, and obtained 6 national invention patents, filling some gaps in this field in China.

On paper, I finally realized that I had to do something about it. Huang Chuanming knows that every traffic individual in the city is his own textbook, the road is the experimental field, and all the research results are from the accumulated practice. With the development of the city, the urban traffic has also undergone dynamic changes, and some places even need to be fine-tuned every year, so Huang Chuanming continues to optimize the city's signal lights day after day.

"In fact, the traffic lights have not changed, but our travel needs have changed, so every research, adjustment, and improvement is an accumulation and improvement for me." Huang Chuanming said and gave an example.

Since the second half of 2019, the traffic management department has found that the complaint information at the north intersection of Lion Mountain on Nanhu Avenue has gradually increased, and citizens have reported that the queue time at the intersection in the morning and evening rush hours is very long, and sometimes queues up to the intersection of Luoshi South Road more than 150 meters and beyond, resulting in the phenomenon of traffic "overflow".

Huang Chuanming and his team members found that the average daily traffic flow of the intersection reached 26,000 vehicles, on the one hand, the occupancy rate of the three surrounding communities continued to increase, and the flow of people and traffic continued to increase; on the other hand, the Yangsi Port Expressway was opened to traffic, and the pressure was transmitted to Nanhu Avenue; in addition, the left turn of the intersection was intertwined with the straight traffic flow, which also reduced the traffic efficiency and caused "pain".

"In order to control the average length of the queue at the intersection to less than 50 meters and reduce the public's sense of travel anxiety, we formulated three sets of plans at that time, and the team also had a heated discussion." Huang Chuanming frankly said that each program has its advantages and disadvantages, and how to achieve the most efficient or by the public to experience. In the end, according to the site conditions, they expanded a new left-turn lane on the basis of the existing two-way 4 lanes on Nanhu Avenue, and optimized the signal light timing, and released the left-turn vehicle in advance to alleviate the conflict between the left-turn vehicle and the target vehicle, so as to facilitate the surrounding residents to go home.

"However, we have also banned left turn restrictions on vehicles leaving the community on Lion Mountain North Road, and all right turns can improve traffic efficiency, but for some vehicles that need to turn left when going out, the cost of travel is increased, and overall the intersection has been optimized, but some people still do not fully enjoy the dividends after the change." Huang Chuanming introduced.

Colleagues familiar with Huang Chuanming know that he is a person who pursues perfection and always hopes to optimize the program more perfectly, but many times fish and bear paws cannot be combined, and every adjustment is refined, only hoping that every traffic participant will bring a better user experience.

"Individual travel needs are different, everyone will stand in their own perspective to see whether travel is convenient, but our optimization should be from the background of the times, from a macro perspective to consider the whole picture, after all, travel is a major event in people's livelihood, we must try our best to achieve perfection." Huang Chuanming said.

The intelligent development of transportation technology management is an inevitable history, and it is also a heavy responsibility entrusted by the times. From 2000 to the present, the intelligent development of signal lights in Wuhan has gone through three stages of international cooperation, digestion and absorption, and independent development, and is the earliest batch of cities in the country to build regional control systems.

"18 years ago, 136 intersection signal lights in Hankou film in Wuhan city were intelligent, and I was one of the first police officers to contact foreign signal light control systems, and I really felt very advanced at that time." Huang Chuanming recalled that this control system is developed by European companies, the system interface is pure Spanish, installation and debugging experts from many European countries, in order to understand the technology thoroughly, Huang Chuanming and experts often communicate in English and Spanish, and sometimes even use drawings to compare.

After years of development, this technology has long realized the independent research and development of domestic scientific research enterprises, and has made great progress, but the communication barriers between different manufacturers have become a new problem hindering development.

"Signal control systems are crucial to the refined, intelligent and global application of urban traffic management, and from the 10th year of joining the police, I have had the idea of integrating different signal light control systems into a platform." Huang Chuanming said.

This idea is the prototype of the Wuhan intelligent signal light area control system, which can uniformly manage the real-time light state, timing scheme and intersection traffic of the city's signal lights, and realize the unified regulation of the city's signal lights across the system.

"For example, I only need to operate on this system, and I can immediately achieve the smooth flow of cross-administrative sections in Wuhan and open up a life channel for emergency rescue."

It's easier said than done. Due to the different construction periods of the intelligent signal light system in various districts of the city, the system brands used are different, and the degree of intelligence is different, it is not an easy task to unify them.

"The most difficult thing is to standardize the platform signals of different manufacturers, just like everyone is holding a meeting together, each speaking their own dialect, not understanding each other, I have to carry out 'simultaneous interpretation' so that all members can understand the instructions." Huang Chuanming explained.

After nearly two years of continuous efforts, the intelligent signal light area control system was put into operation in 2016, the system is composed of four parts: basic management, operation and maintenance management, lamp management, Internet + signal lights, to achieve 3527 traffic lights in Wuhan City network intelligent operation, this completely independent intellectual property rights system has also become the "strongest brain" of urban signal light network control.

In the eyes of colleagues, Huang Chuanming is a person who never talks about conditions in his work, does a line, loves a line, drills a line, is willing to bear hardships, is diligent and studious, and has won countless awards, he did not slow down, but continued to work hard.

In 2019, 43-year-old Huang Chuanming decided to pursue a doctorate in transportation engineering at Wuhan University of Technology while working, better integrating his practical experience with theoretical knowledge and moving towards the direction of artificial intelligence in traffic management.

"At present, smart transportation is still in the initial stage of development, and the use of integrated technologies such as big data, artificial intelligence, mobile 5G, and intelligent perception to build a traffic spatio-temporal big data control system is the future development direction." Huang Chuanming said.

At present, he and his team are working hard to build a traffic signal control system with deep machine learning, and will take the lead in using artificial intelligence holographic to restore traffic reality, build a big data model of urban traffic spatio-temporal, realize AI intelligent area coordinated control, use technology to perceive the pulse of the city, create exquisite transportation, and provide a better travel experience for citizens.
