It is not uncommon for outfielders to help back-up pitchers substitute, but it is not often seen that the outfielders substitute the guards who are expected to compete for the "Best Pitcher of the Year"!
Rays outfielder Brett Phillips today as a backup pitcher, relying on a "premium slow ball" to let the Athletics hit the out-of-bounds fly ball, at which point Phillips played the outfielder's fast legs and slid in front of the enemy team's lounge to get the batter out.
