Electric vehicle fans: Will the fast charging time be lengthened at low temperatures?

According to the test done by the overseas electric vehicle website "Insideevs", in a low temperature environment, when using DC fast charging to charge electric vehicles, it will take longer to charge due to the reduction of charging power, taking the modern Ioniq 5 as an example, in the temperature of about 0 degrees, the fast charging time will increase by about 66%.

Electric vehicle fans: Will the fast charging time be lengthened at low temperatures?

The level of temperature will affect the performance of the battery, has been proved by many experiments and measurements, for example, in the extremely low temperature environment, the battery of the smartphone or digital camera will drop significantly; in the automotive field, whether it is a 12V lead-acid starting battery, or the high-voltage battery inside the electric vehicle, it will also be affected by low temperature.

According to the actual measurements of "Insideevs", electric vehicles will also be affected by temperature when performing DC fast charging, especially electric vehicles that are not equipped with pre-adjusting the battery temperature (Preconditioning) function before charging, and when they encounter low temperatures, they will consume longer charging time.

Insideevs actually used Hyundai Ioniq 5 (long-mileage version) to conduct multiple charging tests with charging devices up to 350 kW at temperatures from 0 degrees Celsius to minus 5 degrees Celsius, and found that charging from 10% to 80% took an average of about 30 minutes, which was about 66% more time than the original 18 minutes.

In addition, the peak power of the record DC fast charge, the highest value to 147kW, and the original 240kW peak power is achieved under the condition of 25 degrees of temperature, the difference between the two is about 60%, which is also roughly reflected in the increase in charging time.

In fact, the vehicle in the lower temperature conditions, will indeed make the charging time longer, and before charging the vehicle has a long time to drive, battery temperature conditions and other conditions, will affect the charging time, roughly speaking, when the temperature is higher, the shorter the charging time, but because of environmental factors is difficult to control, there is still no complete test plan.
