author:Beijing News Network

This morning, Liu Jiawei officially took over as the director of Workers' Daily. Previously, Liu Jiawei served as deputy secretary of the party group and editor-in-chief of Workers' Daily.

Sun Dehong, former director of Workers' Daily, was transferred to nankai university's School of Journalism and Communication as a professor in March this year.

Liu Jiawei's resume:

Liu Jiawei, Ph.D., senior editor, is currently the Party Secretary, President and Editor-in-Chief of Workers' Daily. He has won the China Journalism Award and the China Famous News Column Award for many times, and has been selected as "Cultural Famous Artist and Four Batches of Talents" and "National Leading Talents in the Press and Publication Industry", and is an expert who enjoys special government allowances from the State Council.

In May 1996, he entered the Workers' Daily newspaper and successively served as the first edition editor of the news center, the deputy director of the international department (presiding over the work), the deputy director of the important news department, the director of the news and commentary department, and has served as the deputy editor-in-chief and editor-in-chief since 2005. In his career, he has engaged in or been in charge of most of the editing and editing business, including domestic news, international news, news commentary, etc., and has authored "News Essay Collection" and "Media Review Observation".

In 2004, Liu Jiawei published a paper in China Reporter entitled "The Principle and Grasp of Trade-offs in News Commentary Manuscripts", at which time Liu Jiawei was the director of the news and commentary department of Workers Daily. Today, 18 years later, re-reading this old article, many of its ideas are still praised. Like what:

"We often see such a manuscript, the whole article is correct, and there is only one problem: emptiness."

"News commentary must be ideological, and this is not an excessive demand."

"Don't stay on the simple level of 'praise' or 'criticism', but focus on it." If we only stay at the level of "approval" or "disapproval", then the so-called news commentary actually loses its meaning of existence, because these things are often objectively expressed and completed in the process of news reporting."

In addition, some of the expressions that naturally flow out of this article make a journalist's professional temperament, journalistic feelings and professional self-esteem come to the fore, such as:

"In the daily editorial work, it is precisely such manuscripts that touch our "excitement point" again and again, and frankly speaking, it is the existence of such things that allows us to appreciate the meaning of work."

"We can look at any news event from many different angles or even at different levels, and discussions and even debates on some issues, including some major issues, are permissible and necessary today."

This sentence may be more appropriately expressed in another way: the author and even the media should embody a kind of rationality, embody a certain tolerance, for example, on the question of whether to be 'hidden', it is often possible to reflect the maturity of the author and even the media. In other words, the fundamental point is not that it is 'hidden' or not 'hidden', but that there is an atmosphere in the handling of similar problems. ”

"In the face of complex news events, if you can put forward some unique insights, can have some exclusive summaries and refinements, then such articles often give people a refreshing feeling, and its impact on society is often much greater."

"If we can always maintain such an advantage and make the most of our strengths, then the existence of news commentary is very meaningful."

We share the full text below for the reference of our peers, and also wish the comments and overall coverage of the Workers Daily to the next level.

The principle and grasp of trade-offs for news commentary

Liu Jiawei

First, the principle of trade-offs between news commentary manuscripts

When it comes to the principle of trade-offs, it must be related to the positioning of media news commentary itself. For example, the "news commentary" of the Workers' Daily should comment on recent events, so as to maximize the value of news and provide readers with a multi-angle and multi-faceted observation and reference. Therefore, the trade-off of manuscripts should follow the following three principles:

1. Journalistic

Usually, news commentary is a statement of opinion, opinion, analysis, etc. on the news facts that have already occurred, so when we select a manuscript, the first question we pay attention to is often: Where is the news, what is the news? In other words, at any given time, journalisticity still comes first.

The pursuit of maximizing news value is the direction we have been striving for. Without news, there is no maximization of news value. Although the text and views of many manuscripts are quite good, it is precisely because of the lack of the most basic element of "news" that many times we have to endure love.

2. Targeted

It's common sense for comments to address targeted issues. We can look at any news event from many different angles or even at different levels, and discussions and even debates about some issues, including some major issues, are allowed to be necessary today. So it can be said that the coverage of news reviews is quite extensive, and the key is that we want to say something.

In fact, this issue is related to the above-mentioned newsworthy question. If there is a lack of basic news facts, the so-called pertinence, the so-called targeted, is often an empty phrase. We often see such a manuscript, the whole article is correct, and there is only one problem: emptiness. It's okay to put it here, and there's nothing wrong with putting it somewhere else.

And emptiness is precisely the taboo of news commentary. In fact, every news event must have its own specific conditions for generation. For each different news fact, news phenomenon, or to explore its causes, or to analyze its trend, and to observe and understand these things that appear on the surface to be accidental and individual cases in a universal sense, then such an article is not the same as a general work. In the daily editing work, it is precisely such manuscripts that touch our "excitement point" again and again, and frankly speaking, it is the existence of such things that allow us to appreciate the meaning of work.

3. Ideological

Thought is to criticism, just as the elements of journalism are indispensable to news works. Therefore, it is not too much of a requirement to say that news commentary must be ideological.

Thought should not be a very mysterious thing, it can actually be very real and concrete. One is the perspective of the problem. In contrast, this is a high demand. In the face of complex news events, if you can put forward some unique insights, can have some exclusive generalizations and refinements, then such articles often give people a refreshing feeling, and its impact on society is often much greater.

Second, some issues of understanding and grasping involving news commentary

This is a very big topic, and it is also a very big problem, and it is impossible to fully explain it in a limited scope and a limited space. For example, the trade-off principle of the manuscript mentioned above is, in a sense, also a division of understanding and grasping. The so-called "understanding" and "grasp" are listed here separately, because they belong to some of the more common and obvious basic problems that must be solved at the same time.

1. Don't stay on the simple level of "praise" or "criticism", but focus on it.

Many readers and authors understand news commentary too simplistically. In the eyes of some people, these articles are either "criticism" or "praise", and both can only be one or the other. It is undeniable that, in either case, it does embody a certain tendency, manifested as "approval" or "disapproval" of a certain issue at an event. However, if we only stay at the level of "approval" or "disapproval", then the so-called news commentary actually loses its meaning of existence, because these things are often objectively expressed and completed in the process of news reporting.

Therefore, praise or criticism are not the fundamental purpose of news commentary, and even in many cases these can be ignored, the important thing is that through the full discussion of some news events that people "like" or "do not approve", they rise to the general sense of understanding and observation, and find out some regular and universal things from them, in order to have a positive impact on social life.

2. Look at things in an objective, not emotional, manner

Although news commentary is a personal point of view, and the general understanding of views is of course subjective, in reality this perception is harmful and therefore undesirable. The reason is that since the news phenomenon of news events is objective, then all our analysis and discussion, our views and conclusions should be based on facts, that is, based on objectivity. If this is not the case, it is easy to lead to some common problems common to many review articles. For example, drilling horns, infinite associations, subjective assumptions and even alarmism and so on. If you add some emotional things such as personal likes and dislikes, the conclusions drawn will not only be difficult to stand on their own, but will inevitably have some differences with social reality.

And the same is reflected in the style of writing, is it a spit for fast, mean and picky, and even export hurtful? Or do you speak peacefully about some truths, discuss some issues rationally, and carefully comment on some personnel matters?

3. Proper "concealment" is not only necessary, but also reflects the rationality and tolerance of the author and even the media itself.

This sentence may be more appropriately expressed in another way: the author and even the media should embody a kind of rationality, embody a certain tolerance, for example, in the question of whether to "hide", often reflect the maturity of the author and even the media. In other words, the fundamental point is not that "hidden" is not "hidden", but that there is an atmosphere in the handling of similar problems.

Discussing such an issue is naturally related to the problem. As far as the news is concerned, the time and place of course must be detailed, and it cannot be "hidden" for the parties, and even sometimes it cannot be "hidden" for the people involved, which is the basic requirement of the news. So, is it contradictory for what we call "newsworthiness" that news commentary is sometimes "secretive" to the parties or the persons involved?

Specific issues should be analysed on a case-by-case basis, and some situations require caution. For example, not long ago, the "wounded bear" incident of Liu Haiyang, a student at Tsinghua University, published a large number of comments by the media. In the meantime, we have noticed that some articles in the media have their own emphases on the issues involved, and they all have "hidden" about the parties involved, for example, some "hidden" went to the "Tsinghua University" involved party, because the issues to be discussed are not necessarily related to the specific university; some "hidden" went to the identity of college students, because whether they are college students does not explain any problem; some "hidden" went to the name "Liu Haiyang", because when they rose to a general sense to look at similar issues, there are individuals called " It doesn't matter whether Liu Haiyang or Li Haiyang is anymore.

When we carefully taste this "concealment", we find that its "newsworthiness" is not affected by some "concealment", on the contrary, due to the conscious "concealment" of the author or the media, some parties involved have been protected as they should be, so that they avoid some unnecessary pressure and even harm, and the media reflects rational tolerance at the same time, more prominent in their own atmosphere and responsibility.

4. News commentary should focus on solving people's awareness problems, rather than specific operational problems

Making such a point does not mean that the operational level issues are not important. Awareness is important, and so is the operation. However, leaving aside factors such as length, a basic fact is that when it comes to the specific operational level of a certain issue, the media commentary has no advantage at all: when it comes to academic value or theoretical level, it is certainly inferior to that of experts and scholars in these fields; when it comes to specific measures or operational methods, it is not as good as the experts in the industry and related managers and decision-makers...

Still, the media can and should speak because the media has the advantage of media. This advantage lies in the fact that while paying close attention to society, the media can often consciously examine and compare certain news events and news phenomena in the context of society, so as to highlight the ideological and cognitive significance contained in these phenomena, from various perspectives and provide reference for people to understand these problems from a higher level, and ultimately prompt people to find countermeasures to solve problems and promote progress.

Therefore, we say that news commentary should focus on solving the problem of "awareness", in large part because of the consideration of taking advantage of the strengths and avoiding the shortcomings. If we can always maintain such an advantage and make the most of our strengths, then the existence of news commentary is very meaningful.
