The temporary steel trestle connecting Shenzhen and Hong Kong has become a lifeline for the entry and exit of personnel and materials. Huang Keqi, an "old bridge man" who has been in the industry for 22 years and has presided over the construction of more than a dozen bridges, found that this "simple" steel trestle has almost become an "impossible" task.
"There are no drawings, no hydrological, geological data, or even bridge locations, only that after 7 days, hundreds of people will cross the river from here, and every minute is extremely precious." Huang Keqi said.
Less than 48 hours after the mission was issued, the first bridge pile steadily entered the riverbed of the Shenzhen River.

Build a house on a "tofu field"
Geological survey data show that the weak soil layer of the Lok Ma Chau Loop is thicker and has poorer traits. Wang Hong vividly refers to the project as "building a house on a 'tofu field'".
Lu Mengyuan, who graduated with a ph.D. last year, faced the challenge of digging a 7.5-meter-deep foundation pit on the weak soil layer to house the septic tank of the emergency hospital.
After the official start of construction, the excavation of 1.5 meters of foundation pit gushed out water. Lü Mengyuan found that the actual working area was a silt fish pond, facing the threat of foundation pit collapse at any time.
"The soil conditions are so poor that it is too difficult to dig a foundation pit that is larger than a standard pool and 7.5 meters deep." She said.
For reinforcement and waterproofing, workers laid two rows of steel sheet piles along the edge of the pit and "locked" the silt pond like a high wall.

Even if sufficient measures are taken, the squeeze of the silt is still strong, and the deformation of the foundation pit may occur at any time. Lü Mengyuan and chief engineer Zhang Qinghua had to change the construction plan several times.
"Building a house on a 'tofu field' is so difficult to even dig a pit." Zhang Qinghua said.
Liu Shengqiang, the director of the A3 work area of the first phase of the hospital, specially bought a pair of soft-soled sneakers before entering the field, preparing for an average of 20,000 steps per day. After 30 days, the shoes were covered with all kinds of dirt, and the soles of the shoes were worn out of shape.
At the construction site, mud-stained shoes are the highest badge of merit, and stepping into a silt pit is an experience that almost everyone has ever experienced. Every time Chen Bolin went to the scene, he did not forget to remind the people behind him to pay attention to his feet, who expected that he would fall into the mud with one foot. Nearly 1.8 meters tall, he struggled for half a day without pulling his calf out of the mud, or the people around him dragged him out.
