Just now, QS released the 2022 World University Rankings by Subject! The ranking covers 51 sub-disciplines and 5 academic areas and is designed to help students find the world's leading universities in their chosen field to meet their needs for high-level disciplines.
Compared with the World University Rankings, the biggest reference significance of the World University Rankings for students is to see some schools that are not high in comprehensive rankings but hide their ace strength. Many schools have incomplete colleges or have only one college themselves, and although they are also very strong, they are not eligible for the comprehensive ranking list.

Ranking metrics
This year's subject rankings examine and include more than 15,200 different academic programs, an increase of more than 1,000 compared to last year's rankings. This means that the QS World University Rankings 2022 become the largest student-oriented subject rankings on the market. Together with the ranking of the five major academic fields, a total of 17,700 items were listed in this ranking.
The QS World University Rankings 2022 consist of five indicators, namely academic reputation, employer reputation, average paper citation rate, H index, and international research network (IRN index, used for the five subject area rankings). Among them, the "International Research Network" is a newly introduced indicator in the 2022 version of the ranking. The "H-index" is a way to measure the productivity and impact of a scientist's or scholar's published work.
The QS World University Rankings by Subject use different weights for each of these indicators.
For example, in the field of medicine, the rate of publication of papers is very high, with research citations and H-indexes accounting for 25% of each university's total score. On the other hand, in areas where publication rates are much lower, such as history, these research-related metrics account for only 15% of the total ranking score. At the same time, in fields such as art and design, because there are too few papers published to be statistically significant, rankings are based only on employers and academic surveys.

Majors in this area include: Archaeology, Architecture, Art & Design, Classical Literature and Ancient History, English Language and Literature, History, Linguistics, Modern Linguistics, Performing Arts, Philosophy, Theology/Theology and Religious Studies.
In the 2022 QS Humanities and Arts, the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom each won the top 1 & 2 positions this year, while the University of Edinburgh entered the top ten list for the first time this year, ranking 9th.

Engineering and technology
This field includes majors in computer science and information systems, chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, mineral and mining engineering, and petroleum engineering.
In this field, the top 1 is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States itself known for science and engineering; while the University of Oxford and Cambridge in the United Kingdom still occupy the top three positions, and Imperial College still maintains the position of 8th.

In the 2022 Life Sciences and Medicine Rankings, UCL (University College London) has risen 2 places from last year's rankings, and Imperial College London has also entered the top ten list this year, which is the best proof of its strength
Field of natural sciences
This field includes majors in chemistry, earth and marine sciences, environmental studies, geography, materials science, mathematics, physics & astronomy, geology, and geoscience.
In this field, the strength of the British bull sword is second only to the United States MIT and Harvard University, and the overall ranking is not much different from last year.
Social Sciences and Management
This field includes majors in accounting and finance, anthropology, media studies, development studies, economics and econometrics, education and training, law and law studies, library and information management, political science, social policy and administration, sociology, sports-related disciplines, statistics and operations research.
In the top 10 rankings in this field, Oxford University is ranked 2nd after Harvard University, and as an LSE with outstanding performance in the field of social sciences, it also surpasses Cambridge University in 3rd place.
According to QS official statistics, in the 2022 World University Rankings, the first place in 13 sub-disciplines is British institutions, of which 6 subjects are at the top of the list from Oxford University.
