Hyundai IONIQ 5 is a model developed under Hyundai's pure electric platform E-GMP platform. Recently, this car has launched a new model in the Korean market, and the core change is that the battery capacity has increased, and the mileage has also increased accordingly.
According to the news of the South Korean Energy Agency website on the 5th, the newly certified IONIQ 5 single-charge mileage 19-inch tire version is 458 kilometers, and the 20-inch tire version is 420 kilometers (based on remote rear-wheel drive). Considering the cruising range of the current model of 19 inches 429 km and 120 inches 401 km, the increase is as high as 6.9%.
This is due to an increase in battery capacity. According to emission noise certification data released by the Ministry of environment in February, the new car has the same battery capacity as the current Ioniq 5 (long endurance), but the battery rating has been increased from 653 volts to 697 volts. As a result, the battery capacity (voltage x capacity) was 77.4 kWh, an increase of about 6.7% compared to the previous (72.6 kWh).
This is at the same level as the Kia EV6. Earlier, at the time of the Kia EV6's release, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 was criticized for having a smaller battery capacity. Especially released in North America, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is equipped with a 77.4kWh battery, similar to the Kia EV6, so Korean users are dissatisfied with its range. Therefore, Hyundai decided to increase the endurance after a year to reach the same capacity as the North American model.
In addition, the higher the battery voltage, the higher the motor output. According to the certification data, the maximum output of the RWD model is 228.6 hp (about 168 kW), which is 5% higher than the previous (160 kW). This also applies to AWD models. The newly certified AWD models have the largest output of 74kW front motor and 165.4kW rear motor, an increase of 7.6% and 3.4%, respectively.
However, the cruising range is still shorter than the EV6. The EV6 has a long range of 475 km with 19-inch tires and 434 km with 20-inch tires, which is about 4% longer than the Iwaiq 5 and the same specifications.
The difference in mileage is believed to be due to the high bodywork of the IONIQ 5. In fact, the overall height of the Ioniq 5 (1605mm) is approximately 5cm higher than the EV6 (1550mm). This leads to more air resistance, which seems to reduce efficiency.
On the other hand, the new Ioniq 5 will also apply various new technologies, which is expected to further enhance product capabilities. This can be seen in the introduction of Ioniq 5 released by Hyundai Motor Europe in February.
According to Hyundai Motor Europe, the new IONIQ 5 will be applied to digital exterior mirrors as well as digital interior mirrors (streaming mirrors). In the past, people have complained that the Ioniq 5 has poor rear visibility on snowy and rainy days because it does not have a rear wiper. The installation of streaming mirrors will solve this problem.
The new model also includes a new battery conditioning system. The system is expected to improve battery life especially during the cold winter months. When moving to the charging station, the battery is preheated to a temperature suitable for fast charging. Hyundai Auto Europe explains, "When the charging station is set as the destination, it is automatically activated. In addition, the "Smart Frequency Damper" that improves ride comfort by improving the responsiveness of the front and rear suspensions has been improved.
