In 800 AD, in order to gain strong support from the Frankish kingdom, Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome during a Christmas rally.
The Charlemagne Empire at this time, at the beginning of the ninth century AD, had encompassed most of southwestern Europe. However, the Byzantine emperor, believing himself to be the rightful heir to the Roman Empire, refused to accept the fact that Charlemagne was crowned.
It was not until 812 AD, after Charlemagne announced the renunciation of some of its possessions near the Adriatic Sea, that the Byzantine Empire recognized the new empire ruled by Charlemagne in the Treaty of Aachen. With Aachen as its capital, Charlemagne ruled the empire and tried to develop the city into a new Rome.

In 814, Charlemagne died, passing the empire to his youngest son, Louis the Pious. However, Louis's sons, Louis the German, Charles II the Bald, and Roger I fought over succession.
In 843, the three grandsons of Charlemagne reached the Treaty of Verdun, which divided the empire, and the three-way struggle was over. Europe itself chose the path of "Tuien Order", this time completely destroying the dream of a unified European empire. Roughly established the future franco-German border.
The signing of the Treaty of Verdun, the divisions between the successors, and the invasion of the Normans and Magyars eventually led to the decline of the largest unified empire in medieval Europe, the Charlemagne Empire.
After the death of Louis III in 911, the East Frankish Empire in present-day Germany became hereditary extinct. Their rule over the West Franconian region of present-day France lasted until 987.
