Overmars is interested in joining Newcastle as director of football

According to the latest news from the British media, former Arsenal star Marc Overmars is in talks with Newcastle to join the team as football director.

The club's new owner has already gotten in touch with the 48-year-old former Dutch winger, who has been recruiting and developing stars for Ajax for the past 9 years and enjoys extremely high acclaim in the industry.

Before that, Newcastle had tentatively contacted Overmars, and when the Dutchman learned that the team would have ample funds and long-term plans, expressed interest in moving to Tyneside.

And, according to insiders, Overmars wants to travel to Newcastle with Ajax coach Eric Tenghager.

Tenhag, 51, turned down An invitation to Tottenham Hotspur last summer and was seen by many in the media as a possible replacement for Solskjaer.

With Oviemus on his contract with Ajax still nearly three years away, Newcastle is likely to pay compensation to Ajax to allow the former Arsenal star to join the team.

For the position of director, there are two other candidates on the Saudi consortium's list: Lille's director, the Portuguese Luis Campos, who has trained players such as Mbappe, Fabinho and Martial in Monaco, and Michael Edwards of Liverpool, who is leaving Anfield at the end of the season.

Overmars has had a brilliant career, spending three years at Arsenal, during which time he helped Wenger's side win the Premier League and FA Cup doubles. He currently earns around £600,000 a year in the Netherlands and he hopes to quadruple when he comes to Newcastle.

Since joining Ajax, the team has won four Eredivisie titles and two Dutch Cups. He also qualified for the Champions League group stage seven times, reaching the semi-finals in 2019 and stopping in the quarter-finals last season.

In recent years, Ajax has earned £600 million on player transfers, including the sale of frankie De Jong, De Ligt, Zieghe and Van de Beek, while the biggest transfer expense was £20 million from West Ham United to buy Sebastian Alai.

Overmars has also done an excellent job of developing homegrown players, with at least 42 academy graduates entering the first team during his tenure.

He has been close to Arsenal in recent years and has turned down the opportunity to work at Camp Nou with Ronald Koeman.

Overmars loved life in England so much that he placed a very British red telephone booth in his garden and was a collector of British license plates.
