The student is of mixed race, but he has Japanese nationality, his father is Japanese, his mother is American, and he was born in the United States. The student enrolled at Waseda University in 2014, pursued a master's degree at graduate school in 2018, and a ph.D. in 2021.
The student said that four times from March to November 2017 to attend international academic conferences, the associate professor arranged for the same room and was forced to do multiple acts, a relationship that lasted until the summer of 2018.
The student said he was 20 years old at the time because the associate professor was the academic advisor to his course and did not dare to resist his request. Afterwards, the associate professor also took him home to have a relationship with the school's office. In addition, he was asked by the associate professor to help her pick up and drop off the children to and from class, help with homework and prepare dinner.
Over the years, students became increasingly distressed, developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and considering suicide.
In March 2021, the student reported it to Waseda University, but the associate professor denied it, and in July of the same year, the Waseda University Harassment Prevention Committee concluded that the associate professor had not committed any illegal acts such as harassment.
The doctoral student was not satisfied with the results of the investigation, and the student reported it to the school again, asking the school to investigate again. With the help of Professor Haruko Noguchi, a doctoral supervisor at waseda University's Faculty of Political Economy, a third-party committee was established in August 2021.
In this investigation, the associate professor admitted to sharing the same room with the student on the business trip and also asked the student to take care of her children, but denied that the two had a relationship, and the school once again determined that the professor did not violate the law based on the associate professor's statement.
The PhD student ultimately chose to sue the associate professor and the university and offer compensation. He argued that Waseda University had only unilaterally accepted the associate professor's statement, saying, "The investigation by the Waseda University Harassment Prevention Committee and the Third Party Committee is not fair." ”

The university is aware that our students have held a press conference, but as of March 25, 2022, we have not received the relevant legal documents.
Schools always stand with the victims and do not tolerate incidents of sexual harassment.
