Recently, Waseda University in Japan was exposed to a 25-year-old male doctoral student, accusing a married female associate professor of the university of forcing her to have a relationship with her for many years, and now claims 7.5 million yen (about 389,200 yuan) in compensation.

The student is of mixed race, but he has Japanese nationality, his father is Japanese, his mother is American, and he was born in the United States. The student enrolled at Waseda University in 2014, pursued a master's degree at graduate school in 2018, and a ph.D. in 2021.

The student said that four times from March to November 2017 to attend international academic conferences, the associate professor arranged for the same room and was forced to do multiple acts, a relationship that lasted until the summer of 2018.

The student said he was 20 years old at the time because the associate professor was the academic advisor to his course and did not dare to resist his request. Afterwards, the associate professor also took him home to have a relationship with the school's office. In addition, he was asked by the associate professor to help her pick up and drop off the children to and from class, help with homework and prepare dinner.

Over the years, students became increasingly distressed, developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and considering suicide.

In March 2021, the student reported it to Waseda University, but the associate professor denied it, and in July of the same year, the Waseda University Harassment Prevention Committee concluded that the associate professor had not committed any illegal acts such as harassment.

The doctoral student was not satisfied with the results of the investigation, and the student reported it to the school again, asking the school to investigate again. With the help of Professor Haruko Noguchi, a doctoral supervisor at waseda University's Faculty of Political Economy, a third-party committee was established in August 2021.

In this investigation, the associate professor admitted to sharing the same room with the student on the business trip and also asked the student to take care of her children, but denied that the two had a relationship, and the school once again determined that the professor did not violate the law based on the associate professor's statement.

The PhD student ultimately chose to sue the associate professor and the university and offer compensation. He argued that Waseda University had only unilaterally accepted the associate professor's statement, saying, "The investigation by the Waseda University Harassment Prevention Committee and the Third Party Committee is not fair." ”

In response, Waseda University responded:

The university is aware that our students have held a press conference, but as of March 25, 2022, we have not received the relevant legal documents.

Schools always stand with the victims and do not tolerate incidents of sexual harassment. The university conducted two neutral and impartial investigations into the matter, and we conducted a thorough investigation. However, we will not disclose the results of the investigation so as not to affect the judicial investigation.

In addition, in the previous investigation by the university, the female associate professor may have misbehaved as a teacher, and if it is confirmed to be a fact in future investigations, it will be dealt with severely. Finally, the university apologized for the inconvenience caused to the students, parents and other students involved, including undergraduates in the School of Political Science and Economics and graduate students in the Graduate School.

In the relationship between doctoral students and supervisors, students are relatively on the weak side, and there are many similar cases in domestic universities:

On February 23, 2022, a female student of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine reported in real name that a professor at the university, Li Mou, had an improper relationship with herself and caused her to become pregnant. On the same day, the school set up an investigation team.

The circular said that in response to the report of Li Mou of the affiliated Shuguang Hospital, the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine attached great importance to it, and set up an investigation team at the first time, seriously carried out investigation and verification, and handled it in accordance with laws and regulations. Prior to the announcement, he had suspended his administrative duties and medical, teaching and scientific research work.

At present, according to relevant regulations, the school has decided to start the party discipline and government affairs punishment procedure for Li mou and dismiss him. At the same time, the school reported to the higher authorities for approval to revoke its teacher qualifications in accordance with the procedures.

According to the Sichuan News Network, Lin Wen (pseudonym), a doctoral student studying at a well-known institution of higher learning in China, said, "Gao Qi (pseudonym) is my doctoral supervisor, about 52 years old, and I heard about him as early as when I was in graduate school." He is quite famous in our school, and the employment situation of the doctoral students brought by him is very promising, and he directly recruited me during the interview. But I didn't think...

When my first Doctoral Dissertation was finished, he went to him for revision, and on the pretext that the office was crowded and that he could not concentrate, he invited me to discuss it in a private room outside the campus. After I went to the appointment, for a whole afternoon, he did not even look at my thesis, but instead talked bitterly about his emotional life, and then forced me to have a relationship with him on the grounds of graduation, and I still had a year to graduate, and I did not dare to reject some of his behavior for the time being."
