LOS ANGELES, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Open champion Daniel Medvedev returned to the ATP on Saturday to beat MacKenzie McDonald 6-4, 6-2 to make it to the third round in Indian Wells.

Today is the 4th matchday of the Indian Wells station, the world number two Russian is the number one men's seeder in the WTA and ATP Masters Hardcours Tournament, his first at-the-TOP in an ATP tournament since he won his first Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows, where he ended Novak Djokovic's Grand Slam.

"Mackenzie is a very strong opponent and he puts a lot of pressure on me," he added. "I'm very happy to beat him."

In the next round, Medvedev will take on Serbian Philippe Krajinovic, who defeated American Marcos Giron 7-6 (7/2), 7-5 in the third round.

Russia's fourth seed Andrei Rublev also made progress, beating Spain's Carlos Tabona 6-3, 6-4.

Women's top seed Karolina Pliskova easily made it to the third round, while fifth-seeded Gabin Muguruza was beaten by Ajira Tomljanovic.

Pliskova finished third in the world, 80 minutes to beat 23-year-old Polish qualifier Magdalena Fretsch in a 7-5, 6-2 final score.

Pliskova hit six aces balls, giving her WTA-led 387 points this season, and five of the six break chances against Flic won.

Meanwhile, Spain's Muguruzza was beaten 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 by Australia's TomJanovic, who reached the grand slam quarter-finals for the first time at Wimbledon earlier this year.

Bianca Andreescu beat American Alison Riske 7-6 (7/2), 5-7, 6-2, another shock to the tournament after her 2019 victory.

In other women's matches, French Open champion and third seedEd Barbola Krekikova defeated Kazakhstan's Zarina Díaz 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
