Javier Sotomayor has held a record since 1993: no one has been able to surpass the 2.45-meter jump he achieved in Salamanca, Spain that year. He is often affectionately known as "Soto" in Cuba, and he won gold medals in Barcelona in 1992 and silver at Sydney in 2000. He has also won several world championships in other high jump competitions.
