Axis of Evil series - Devil's Egg - German M39 grenade

M39 ovate grenade

The M39 oval grenade was a light offensive grenade developed by Nazi Germany to improve the portability of the grenade. The M39 was small in size and easy to load and carry in large quantities, and like the M24, it was a grenade commonly used by the Germans during World War II, and was discontinued after the end of World War II.

I.—M39 grenade structure

The M39 consists of a projectile body, a charge, a connecting device and a fuze. The projectile body consists of two hemispheres stamped from a thin sheet of metal, which are then snapped together by a folded edge bite, half of which is flat at the bottom and has a fuze mounting hole, and the other half is closed at the bottom.

The connection device consists of a detonator chamber, a sealing gasket, a wing-shaped tablet, a fuze connection bottom and a connection sleeve. The fuze parts are composed of thunder, detonator connection seat, fuze body, delayed medicine tube, pull fire tube, pull fire cap, pull fire spring, pull fire rope and safety cap. Its fuze, in addition to pulling the fire rope and the safety cap, is basically the same structure as the fuze of the M24.

The safety cap is also stamped with a thin metal plate into two hemispherical shapes, and then the flange bites together, the lower part has a hole for piercing the fire rope, and there is a large diameter round steel plate with holes in the internal cavity, and the pull rope is tied together with the round steel sheet through the lower part of the safety cap, and when the safety cap is pulled, the pull rope will be pulled at the same time.

The M39 is very simple to use, first unscrew the safety cap, and pull outward hard to make it fire, then throw the grenade.

II. — Fuze of the M39 grenade

The M39 grenade is available in several models, differing in the length of fuze extension, the shape of the wing-shaped tablets and their presence or absence. M39 is the most commonly used BZE39 fuze with a delay of 4.5-5 seconds, in order to distinguish the fuze of different delays, the top of the fuse is painted with different colors, and the correspondence with the delay is: blue - 4.5 seconds, red -1 second, yellow -7.5 seconds, gray -10 seconds. Among them, the 1-second delay grenade with the red safety helmet is mainly used to set trap booby traps for instantaneous detonation.

The M39 basically uses a mofa fire fuze, but it has actually used a firing pin fuze, namely BZE40. Except for the firing device that changes the firing device to a firing pin to fire the firing cap, the rest of the BZE39 fuze is the same, which is mainly composed of a fire cap, a firing pin, a firing pin spring and a driving element. Compared with the BZE39 friction ignition fuze, the overall sealing performance of the BZE40 is greatly improved, but the structure is too complex.

III. — Improvements to the M39 grenade

Due to the difference in manufacturer and process, the pulling cap of the M39 grenade has several different styles, some of which are different in the shape of the top and bottom flange bite, and some are in different shapes of the top of the safety cap. The early M39 did not have a wing-shaped compression, but it was later found that these grenades were easy to loosen the fuse after the safety cap was unscrewed, and in order to improve safety performance, the later M39s were equipped with wing-shaped compressions, but the wing-shaped compressions had a variety of styles and shapes.
