Born in Marseille, France, in 1929, Denard came from a military family, his father an army officer and his uncle a naval soldier. From an early age, his fathers told him many stories on the battlefield, received a lot of military education since childhood, and when he grew up, he naturally chose to join the army, joined the French Marine Corps, and became a scout.
After the end of World War II, french colonies in Africa frequently revolted, and Denard's troops were often transferred to Africa to quell the war, which also gave him his first contact with Africa. He was so fond of life in Africa that after retiring in 1951, Denard traveled to Morocco, Africa, with several retired officers, where he assembled a team of mercenaries.
