Famen Temple, located in Famen Town, Fufeng County, Baoji City, Shaanxi Province, China, is known as the "Ancestor of Guanzhong Pagoda Temple". According to legend, Famen Temple was founded in the eleventh year of the Ming Emperor of the Eastern Han Dynasty (68 years), Zhou Wei was formerly known as "Ashoka Temple", and in the early Tang Dynasty, it was renamed "Famen Temple", known as the "Royal Temple", and became a Buddhist holy place admired by the whole country because of the placement of shakyamuni Buddha's finger bone relics. Famen Temple was built in the hengling period at the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Famen Temple because of the relics and the pagoda built for the temple, formerly known as Ashoka Temple. After Shakyamuni Buddha's demise, his body was cremated and formed into a relic. In the third century B.C., after Ashoka unified India, in order to promote Buddhism, he divided the Buddha's relics into 84,000 parts, so that the ghosts and gods in Nanyan Futi distributed them to all countries in the world to build pagodas for worship. There are nineteen in China, and Famen Temple is the fifth.

According to Buddhist texts, Shakyamuni's disciples picked out from the ashes of his body 1 skull, 2 shoulder blades, 4 teeth, 1 middle finger bone, and many bead-shaped relics. During the Tang Dynasty, this finger bone relic was invited to the imperial palace six times to be enshrined. After the last offering in 874 AD, the relic was sealed and stored in the underground palace under the pagoda of Fufeng Famen Temple until it was re-unveiled in 1987.

In the Tang Dynasty, the Buddha of Famen Temple was revered as a relic of the true body of the protector of the country, and eight emperors once opened the Famen Temple underground palace every thirty years to welcome the relics to the palace to make offerings.
