Guangxi Hepu Dugong National Nature Reserve covers an area of 350 square kilometers and is currently the only Dugong National Nature Reserve in China. Zhang Hongke has been working at the seaside for 15 years and is now the director of the conservation area management center.
During the patrol, Zhang Hongke found that some enterprises and villagers illegally occupied the coast and sea areas in the protected area for illegal aquaculture, which seriously damaged the original marine ecology. In order to promote the improvement of the ecological environment in the nature reserve, Zhang Hongke took the opportunity of rectifying the problems found by environmental protection inspectors at all levels, took the initiative to dock with relevant departments, and actively led the clean-up and rectification of illegal breeding in the protected area and law enforcement actions.
Since 2016, Zhang Hongke has led his colleagues to organize a number of law enforcement actions, and the situation of sea aquaculture and pile forests in the protected area has been completely changed.
In order to crack down on illegal elements stealing sea sand, Zhang Hongke has repeatedly docked with the departments of maritime supervision, maritime and coast guard, actively mobilized the masses to provide clues, and often investigated and dealt with illegal sand pumping late at night.
Under the coordination and promotion of Zhang Hongke and colleagues, and through the unremitting efforts of multiple departments, at present, all illegal operations in the protected area have been banned, and the illegal phenomenon of inter-provincial illegal excavation of sea sand has also been effectively curbed.
In recent years, the ecological environment quality of Dugong National Nature Reserve has been steadily improved, and the sea water quality in the protected area has remained stable and excellent, attracting rare aquatic animals to visit repeatedly.
Zhang Hongke's team introduced the method of artificial seagrass breeding, and strived to increase the total area of seagrass beds in the marine area of the reserve and accelerate the repair of the marine ecosystem of the reserve.
In order to enhance the public's awareness of protecting the marine environment, Zhang Hongke carefully prepared a science popularization course on key protected species and ecosystems, and together with the staff of the reserve, came to Beihai Experimental School to carry out the "Popularization of Science on the Protection of Aquatic Wildlife" activity.
