Celebrating the 125th anniversary of Victoria University of Wellington
In 2022, Victoria University of Wellington marks an important milestone, celebrating its 125th anniversary! The original Victoria College was founded in Wellington, New Zealand, on 22 December 1897, on the occasion of Queen Victoria's sixtieth anniversary, hence the name "Victoria". Teaching began two years later, with 115 students enrolled in the first year. The university now has more than 3,000 faculty members and more than 22,000 students, and has grown into a large network of campuses, research centers and institutes.
The 125th anniversary will be commemorated through a year of events that will celebrate the university's strong ties to New Zealand's capital, the success of the university community and the many contributions the university has made to the social, cultural and economic life of Wellington and beyond over the past 125 years.
