The 48-year-old retired goalkeeper made one appearance for France, spending seven seasons in the Parc des Princes in Paris between 1991 and 1996 and winning the Cup Winners' Cup in 1996.

However, due to limited first-team opportunities, he spent two seasons on loan at Caen from 1993 to 1995 and then four more seasons at Spanish club Celta Vigo, making 128 appearances for them.
He then moved to Barcelona, where he spent two years in 2000-02.

The 48-year-old former centre-back joined Luis van Gaal's Barcelona side in the summer of 1999 and played 23 games in the 1999–00 season.

In 2008, Alves moved to Barcelona for a record 40 million euros, signing for four years. In his first season, he won the triple crowns of La Liga, copa del Rey and Champions League, followed by the Spanish Super Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup, and in 2010, he defended his league title, with Alves assisting in double figures for four consecutive seasons.
On 27 June 2016, Juventus announced the signing of a two-year contract with Alves. After becoming the main force of the team, he helped the team win the First Division title, but lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League final.
In the 2017-18 season, Alves moved from Juve to Paris Grande. Winning the league has won the French Cup.

The 39-year-old Arsenal manager started his career with Barcelona B and C between 1999 and 2002, making 47 appearances.
But after failing to break into Barca's first team, the midfield organiser travelled to Paris Saint-Germain in December 2000 to seek more playing time.
In the 2000–01 Champions League group stage, he made his debut at the French giants under Luis Fernandez.
Paris Saint-Germain are hoping to keep Arteta at the end of their loan spell and hope to buy out the midfielder.
However, the Glasgow Rangers made a higher offer and Arteta travelled to Scotland in 2002.
