The upcoming JTBC TV series "Thirty-Nine" looks like a typical romance film, but for director Kim Sang-ho, it means much more.
"A lot of Koreans think 39 is a little special. I think it's too early for 39 to accomplish something special, but it's too late to start something new. The show focuses on romances about three best friends and their approaching 40s, but it's more about how their lives with loved ones, family and relatives have developed," Kim said at an online news conference on Wednesday.
The 40-year-old, widely known as "bulhok" in South Korea, is seen as a watershed. The word "bulhok" can be roughly translated as "resisting temptation" and is accompanied by the expectation that once people reach this age, they should be protected from the temptation that they might succumb to sin or indulgence when they were young. The series revolves around three 39-year-old women, tracking their preparations for Bullock.
Following the success of the hit drama "Forced Landing by Your Side", sun Yizhen, who returned to the small screen for the first time after two years, actress Sun Yizhen, who played the chief dermatologist Che Meizhu, felt that it was the right time to meet "thirty-nine".
"I love every part of the script. I'm about the same age as Micho, and there are a lot of things that I easily empathize with for this character. I was shocked when I read the script because some of Micho's lines were exactly the same as the way I spoke in real life," Son said.
"I even wanted to know if screenwriter Yingya Liu had installed CCTV cameras in my house," the actor added jokingly.
The 12-episode series will begin on February 16 at 10:30 p.m. on JTBC. Thirty-Nine will also be streamed on local streaming platform Tving and global streaming service Netflix.
