Of all the white wine regions of Burgundy, none is as coveted as the Priny-Monthachet white wine of Bernchu. In the gravel limestone lands of Pliny-Monhache, the Chardonnay vines resemble the kings of the land. In this small area of gentle slope vineyards, four of the world's most precious white wines are produced.
Although Pliny-Monhachez was one of the first regions in all of Burgundy to grow grapes, the potential of this most exquisite local specialty has only been recognized in recent years. It is reported that the location of Monhache, which owns principe's current best grand vineyard, was left by its owners at an incredible low price in the early 17th century, when Monhache's wine was barely well-known. The wines of Pliny-Monhache and the wines of Summerhill-Monhache in the south are often indistinguishable. In fact, although the two legal wine regions share a special vineyard, the quality of the wines in the two places is completely different.
First, red wines account for only a very small fraction of the total annual production of the Priny-Monhaches appellation, but in The Summerhills-Monhasches reds account for about half of the total annual production. Secondly, since the best of the two grand vineyards, Batard-Montrachet and Monchache, are in Priny, the well-performing village-level white wines and first-class vineyard liquors alone outperform any white wine in the Cheisan-Monhachet region.
Some of France's most prominent grape growers, vintners and winemakers own vineyards and wineries in Priny-Monthachet, such as Ollvier Leflalve's Château Leflalve and Louis Jadot's Château Duc de Magenta. Still, staggering orders from around the world have led many wineries to mix or inflate prices with secondary options. In general, bottles can be purchased as long as they are marked with four Grand Vineyards, especially from recommended wineries. Other tier 1 vineyards produce equally good wines, such as Le Caillere, ChampCanet, Les Pucelles and les Chalumeaux.
