Georgia is a small European country located in the Caucasus, with a land area of only about 70,000 square kilometers, which is almost equivalent to four Beijings.
Like Russia, Georgia was once a Soviet republic and part of the Soviet family. It is worth mentioning that the most famous figure in the history of the Soviet Union, "Loving Father" Stalin, is a Georgian who is full of children.
Although Georgia and Russia once ate at the same table, their relationship was not good, and they could even be called feuds. As Russia's neighbor, Georgia is a land conquered by a fighting people. As early as the time of the Tsarist Russia, many Caucasian countries, including Georgia, had become part of the Tsarist Empire.
However, conquest is conquest, and Georgia and Russia are not one heart. Even in the entire Caucasus, the Russians were not very interested. They have been trying to draw a clear line with Russia, even seeking independence.
In 1917, the "February Revolution" broke out in Russia, the Romanov dynasty was overthrown, and the Russian Empire collapsed. Georgia seized the opportunity to become independent and established the Democratic Republic of Georgia. With the expansion of Soviet power, Georgia soon became part of the Soviet Union and once again merged with Russia.
Georgia is genuinely reluctant to accept such an outcome. So in the Soviet era, Georgia was still restless, and it was independent when there was nothing to do. But the great Comrade Stalin was really too iron-blooded and did not hesitate to pick up his compatriots. In the end, Georgia can only accept reality and hold high the banner of sickle and hammer.
With the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Georgia finally ushered in its independence and established its own state, the "Republic of Georgia". Unfortunately, Georgia's independence is not perfect, and the shadow from Russia remains.
During the Soviet era, the Caucasus region was divided into Transcaucasia and the North Caucasus. The North Caucasus belongs to the Russian Federation, while Transcaucasia becomes the seat of Georgia and other countries. In the Caucasus, there is a place called Ossetia, which spans the north and south of the Caucasus Mountains, just in the middle of Georgia and Russia.
Therefore, according to the division of the Soviet Union, Ossetia was also divided into two, becoming "South Ossetia" and "North Ossetia". Among them, "South Ossetia" became the land of Georgia, while "North Ossetia" became a part of the Russian Federation.
As the land of the Ossetians, South Ossetia had always wanted to be independent and merge with North Ossetia in Russia. In order to maintain the integrity of its territory, Georgia naturally does not want to see such a thing happen. Therefore, South Ossetia and Georgia have not dealt with each other for a long time, and friction between the two sides is continuous.
Of course, for Georgia, it is not so much a fight with South Ossetia as it is a fight with Russia. After all, the backer behind South Ossetia is obviously Russia.
Because of the gap between South Ossetia, Relations between Georgia and Russia have become increasingly estranged. In 2003, the "Rose Revolution" broke out in Georgia, followed by a new government that came to power and completely went against Russia. And for South Ossetia, which has never been a heart, Georgia has become more and more assertive.
On 1 August 2008, Georgian forces began firing on South Ossetia, defeating the South Ossetian armed forces. However, perhaps because of the fear of Russia, Georgia did not attack in an all-round way. At that time, the opening of the Olympic Games was imminent, the Russian side also maintained a reclusive, and the two sides were still in a delicate balance.
However, on Aug. 8, the day the Beijing Olympics kicked off, Georgia upset that balance. In the early hours of the same day, the Georgian army ignored the warnings of the Russian side and launched a full-scale offensive, which at one point captured Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia.
Obviously, Georgia is just a small country, weak, and the reason why it dares to provoke Russia is undoubtedly that there is someone behind it. Perhaps Russia does not take Georgia seriously, but it has to think twice about the existence behind Georgia. Like Ukraine today, Georgia is just a tool man.
According to Georgia's plan at that time, because it was afraid of the power behind it, Russia would not personally go down. And as long as it can quickly take South Ossetia, then Russia can only accept reality.
Georgia, however, is clearly underestimating Russia's temper. As a world-recognized fighting nation, Russia has always been a flat-headed brother character, paying attention to life and death, and doing it if you don't obey. It doesn't matter who is behind you, punch it first and then say it.
After the Georgian capture of South Ossetia, the Russian side reacted quickly and made the decision to expel Georgian troops from South Ossetia on the afternoon of the 8th. Immediately after the Russian army began to move, in just an hour, russian troops had already entered Tskhinvali. This was followed by a lightning-like russian counterattack.
As mentioned earlier, Georgia is a small country with a long gap in military strength and Russia. Therefore, in the face of the Russian army's attack, Georgia is simply overwhelmed. Sure enough, the situation after the war was completely one-sided, with the Russian army advancing and the Georgian army retreating. The Russians completely took control of the situation in South Ossetia in just one day and expelled the Georgian army from Tskhinvali. In the following days, the Russian army marched side by side, land, sea and air, and began to push Georgia sideways.
In the end, the war lasted only 5 days and ended in a total Georgian rout. This declares that Georgia can no longer prevent the independence of South Ossetia. What is more worth mentioning is that from beginning to end, none of the backers that Georgia relies on have stood up...
Maybe that's when Georgia realized that he was just a pawn that could be discarded at any time. Look at the difference between Georgia and Ukraine today?
Although in terms of power comparison, Ukraine is much larger than Georgia. But in the face of Russia, what are these so-called powers? The result is nothing more than those four words--destroying and decaying.
As for the so-called patrons, they still cherish feathers. Once Georgia was beaten and they did not shoot, and now Ukraine is beaten, they will also choose to watch from the sidelines. Although they are full of indignation and full of condemnation and sanctions, as long as they do not compete with Russia head-on, then the advantage will still be on Russia's side. After all, sanctions such things, Russia has long been accustomed to.
