Simply put, speed skating has a longer history and is more widely developed. Short track speed skating is highly competitive and highly ornamental. The two events differ in size, equipment and rules, especially in terms of clothing, with speed skaters generally wearing hooded jumpsuits to reduce wind resistance, while short-track speed skaters wear safety helmets.
Short-track speed skating allows for some degree of physical collision, but pushing other runners or obstructing others' path will be considered fouls – fouls.
