Johanna Harmon was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1968, but spent most of her childhood in Tempe, Arizona. She began designing and documenting visual observations at the age of seven, but it wasn't until almost two decades later that she learned the language of traditional art at the Scottsdale School of Artists in Arizona and the Fitchin School of Art in Taos, N.Y. Union of Art Students in New Mexico and Denver, Colorado. There, she worked with Carolyn Anderson, John Asaro, Mark Daily, Daniel Gerhartz OPAM, Wang g Ho OPAM and C.W. Mundi Opam. Mundy OPAM) and other famous portrait and figure painters with different artistic philosophies and methods studied painting together. After winning the 2014 OPA Award, she further expanded her understanding by learning contemporary realism with Daniel Sprick and abstract realism with David A. Leffel OPAM and Sherrie McGraw OPAM.
Joanna's work has been featured in numerous individual, group, and jury exhibitions, including the American Portrait Society (PSA), The Painter of America (OPA), the Center for The Revival of the Arts, the California Art Club, and the Scottsdale School of Artists, where she has received many prestigious fames and awards. More recently, her painting "Reverie of Nature" was awarded the Best Outstanding Signature Award at the 2019 OPA National Jury Exhibition, "The Messenger" won second place at the Portrait Society of America 2017 Portrait Art Conference, and "Golden Orchid" won not only the certificate of excellence in the PSA 2016 International Portrait Competition, but also the first place in the non-commissioned portrait category of the PSA 2015 Member-Only Contest. In 2013, Joanna was nominated as an OPA signature member and was inducted into OPA's 22nd National Jury Exhibition, where she won a second Gold Medal, becoming the first artist in the organization's history to win a gold medal for two OPA National Exhibitions. Her first gold medal was won in 2007.
Joanna's work has been published in American Art Collectors, International Artists, Fine Arts Connoisseurs, Southwest Art, New Western Art Handbook, and Santa Fe Spotlight Magazine, and has been collected internationally and honored to be a teacher at PSoA's 2019 Portrait Art Conference and OPA 2017 National Convention, curator and juror of two North River Art Association 'People in Focus' exhibition, and a judge of the 2015 Western Regions Jury Oil Painting Awards in the United States.
Joanna has taught workshops at the Scottsdale School of Artists in Arizona, the North River Art Association in Marshfield Hills, Massachusetts, the Coppini School of Art in San Antonio, Texas, and the Art Student Alliance in Denver, Colorado. Her focus is on clarifying visual intent while nurturing the subject matter of the painting as a whole. This critical understanding defines her work today. She is inspired by Cecilia Beaux, Nicolai Fechin, John Singer Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla, Abbott Handerson Thayer and Anders Zorn.
Joanna now lives in beautiful Colorado with her husband, Steven.
