There have been 4 consumer complaints about related milk powders before. Abbott said that as part of the quality inspection process, the company conducted tests at the Michigan plant and found Enterobacter sakazaki in non-product contact areas of the plant, but there was no evidence of salmonella, and the investigation is still ongoing.
Enterobacter sakazaki is a conditional pathogen present in the environment that may pose a higher health risk to infants aged 0-6 months, especially premature infants, low birth weight infants, and immunocompromised infants.
