Changchun is the capital of Jilin Province, the political, economic, cultural, transportation and other centers of the province, and has a high degree of first place in the province.
In 2021, Changchun's GDP will be 710.3 billion, accounting for more than half of the province; Changchun's permanent population is 9.06 million, accounting for more than half of the province.
Changchun is still very strong among the four major cities in the northeast, and in 2020, Changchun's GDP even surpassed Shenyang, ranking second in the northeast. However, in 2021, it was overtaken by Shenyang and fell back to the third place, but compared with Harbin in the fourth place, it is still much higher.
At the end of last year, the state announced a list of 14 megacities, and Shenyang, Dalian and Harbin in the northeast region were all on the list, and only Changchun was unsuccessful.

Jilin City is also the second largest city in Jilin Province. With a total area of 27,120 square kilometers and an urban area of 3,636 square kilometers, it has jurisdiction over 4 districts and 5 counties (cities), 2 national-level development zones, 15 provincial-level development zones and 1 provincial-level industrial concentration area.
The total registered population is 4.5 million, and the permanent population is 3.62 million, of which 2 million are urban areas.

But today's Jilin City, facing two major problems:

4 Type II large cities: Yanji, Siping, Tonghua, Songyuan, Liaoyuan failed
Type II large cities, with an urban population of 1-3 million, for the general prefecture-level cities, it should not be very difficult to achieve this goal by 2035, but for the northeast region, there is still a certain degree of difficulty.
From the perspective of the population size of the existing urban area, Yanji (580,000 people) > Siping (560,000 people) > Tonghua (500,000 people) = Songyuan (500,000 people).
The situation in these four cities is basically similar, and the urban population is between 500,000 and 600,000. Moreover, the GDP of the four cities is all less than 100 billion, but the foundations of Yanji and Siping are slightly better, and the difficulty of construction is slightly less.
The total population of Tonghua City is only 1.3 million, and if it is built as a big city, it will require 1 million people to live in the urban area, which should be said to be difficult. The next step can be achieved by removing counties and setting up districts.
However, Liaoyuan's volume is even smaller, the total population of the city is less than 1 million, and it is not surprising that it has failed to be selected as a type II large city.
