Artist Profile

Female Artist in Metal Installation - George Seck (3)

George Seck and his partner moved their home and studio from melbourne city centre to St Andrews, a bushland town about 45 minutes' drive from the city. There's a beautiful shed built with all sorts of incredible salvage materials; the old Melbourne docks, church windows, the frame of dairy doors. It is a work of art in itself, and it has also become home to George Seck's future creations. In this section, the artist allows himself to talk about the experience of the creative process, and also allows the viewer to understand the painstaking process of the birth of a work of art.

Creation for me usually starts with an expression or action in my head. I'll draw a little sketch and then find references to show me how this action works — for example, if it's an animal I'm making, I'll see how their muscular structure moves, and then I'll try and work figure out how it's going to move to get to the position in my mind.

Then I'll start creating the inner framework. For me, this is the most important part – it determines the movement and flow of the entire work. Once done, it becomes very organic from there, picking up one fragment at a time and having each fragment come together to decide the outcome.

Appreciation of works (2) Art appreciation

As a self-taught artist, every new opportunity has allowed me to use different materials and learn new technologies. Most of the work I do is mainly to give me the perfect opportunity to create all kinds of wonderful things and use new materials, so always learn and learn as you go.

When the day's work is over, many of my temporary works hang on the roof of our studio, and they create a wonderful surrealist landscape above our heads. This is the state of life I am pursuing.
