According to Jiangmen Customs, the Gulf of California totoaba is an endemic endangered species distributed only in the Gulf of California, Mexico, and was listed as a protected animal in 1976 in cites Appendix I of cites of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, and is the first fish to be listed in CITES Appendix I. Commercial trade is strictly prohibited. Because of the folk legend that its fish gel has beauty and health effects, it is rich in nutritional and medicinal value, and the market price is very high. As a result, unscrupulous elements have taken risks to carry out illegal fishing and smuggling.
