In the early morning of February 10, Beijing time, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) announced the list of new academicians. In the shortlist, Iron Man Musk became an "academician of Ma" in one fell swoop, as well as Dr. Zhang Hongjiang, chairman of the Zhiyuan Research Institute, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Fang Daining of Beijing Institute of Technology were selected as overseas academicians.
Musk was elected to the American Academy of Engineering, please call him "Academician Ma" after that.
The American Academy of Engineering today released the list of additional academicians of the National Academy of Engineering in 2021, and a total of 111 academicians and 22 foreign academicians were selected this time. Among them, the energy storage field includes Tesla (TSLA. O) CEO Musk, LG Energy Solutions Michigan President Gray Denise, etc. General Electric (GE. N) McDonald John, head of the smart grid business, was selected for his achievements in smart grids. In addition, Dr. Zhang Hongjiang, Chairman of Zhiyuan Research Institute, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Fang Daining of Beijing Institute of Technology were selected as foreign academicians.

After the news was announced, Musk quickly thanked him on Twitter.
Musk was selected as a Fellow of the American Academy of Engineering for breakthroughs in the design, engineering, manufacturing and operation of reusable launch vehicles, sustainable transportation and energy systems.
The U.S. Academy of Engineering is one of the four national academic institutions in the United States (the other three are the National Academy of Sciences NAS, the National Academy of Medicine NAM, and the National Science Foundation NSF).
As the highest academic community in the American engineering community, the National Academy of Engineering is not for profit, not only the highest level of academic institutions in the American engineering and technology community, but also one of the more influential engineering institutes in the world.
The three major awards in engineering (Ras Award, Gordon Award, and Charles Stark Draper Award) are selected by the National Academy of Engineering.
Being elected to the National Academy of Engineering is one of the highest professional honors in the engineering community in recognition of those who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, to the engineering literature, as well as to "those who have pioneered new and developing technical fields, made significant progress in traditional engineering fields, or developed/implemented innovative approaches to engineering education."
Each year, the votes of new members of the National Academy of Engineering are held in December, and the final vote for membership will be held in January. NAE Chairman John M. Anderson announced today that the total number of U.S. members and 310 international members has reached 2,388 after the addition of this issue. The qualifications of the new fellows will take effect at the U.S. Academy of Engineering Annual Meeting on October 2, 2022.
22 overseas academicians, Zhang Hongjiang was elected
In the list of new academicians, in addition to Musk, there are 22 foreign academicians. Dr. Zhang Hongjiang, Chairman of China Zhiyuan Research Institute, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Fang Daining of Beijing Institute of Technology were selected.
Dr. Zhang Hongjiang was elected for his outstanding technical contributions and leadership in the field of multimedia computing.
He has served as CEO of Kingsoft, president of Microsoft Asia Engineering Institute, director of Cheetah Mobile, Xunlei Co., Ltd. and CenturyLink Data Center Co., Ltd., and is currently the chairman of Beijing Zhiyuan Artificial Intelligence Research Institute and the investment partner of Source Code Capital.
At present, Dr. Zhang has published nearly 400 academic papers, holds nearly 200 international patents, and is one of the scientists with the highest impact factor in the international computer field.
Fang Daining (Foreign Academician)
Position: Honorary Dean and Chief Scientist of the Institute of Advanced Structural Technology, Beijing Institute of Technology
Reason for selection: Contribution to the mechanics and lightweight multifunctional structure of ferroelectric / ferromagnetic materials under extreme conditions.
Professor Fang received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Nanjing University of Technology in 1982 and 1986 and his Ph.D. from Technion in 1993. In 2013, Fang Daining was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Professor Fang Daining is mainly engaged in the theoretical, computational and experimental research of advanced materials and structural mechanics. The research results have been applied to high-end equipment structures such as the first additive manufacturing satellite in the world and the first special-shaped composite suspension structure of the main bearing force of rail transit equipment in China.
It has independently developed a series of ultra-high temperature test instruments, filled the domestic gap, and become one of the main platforms for the testing of ultra-high temperature mechanical properties of the mainland aerospace industry, supporting the development of major national defense equipment such as space return capsules and key models of missiles.
