The 2018 Hua times Global Short Film Festival ushered in 2039 short films, after the strict selection of the preliminary judges, a total of 120 short films were shortlisted for short films, and the organizers of the conference will launch offline screening activities in conjunction with Sanke Pictures from November: every Monday to Thursday for the type unit curation, Friday and Saturday to hold themes and screenings and post-screening exchanges.
The shortlisted short films of this Hua times Global Short Film Festival are diverse. It is not difficult to see the multi-dimensional perspective of young Chinese people looking at the world, and it is even more important to see young people trying to re-see the world and explain the world from their own perspective. In July, Zhiquan School, located at the northern Beijing, was demolished under the campaign of population dispersal and city renovation. My partner and I approached the two principals and spent three months documenting their dealing with the major migrant students who were therefore forced to reutrn to their hometowns. We decided to set the tone as "What does Beijing mean to you" to unfold the common mixed feelings the film characters were holding towards the capital that has been paying price to cap its population, as well as migrants' recognitions of identities and envisions for futures.

I once lived in the countryside years ago, where two people standing distantly said hello and communicated with each other by the way of folk song. Folk songs can do well in the expressing of different situations and different emotions. Nowadays, I am living in a city, in which the natural mountains have been replaced by man-made “mountains”, namely the high-rising buildings. The way of communication has been replaced by making a phone call or WeChat, but it is not a good way to clearly communicate with each other. Since 2017, I have collected more than six thousand pieces of Hakka folk songs in the south of China, based on which one hundred of city folk songs with a form of traditional Chinese folk song have been created. These songs tell a variety of stories. I imagine that, hawkers, city inspectors, online celebrities, white-collar workers, out-seller, real estate sales, and so on, they sing and express themselves by the way of folk song.
