In 1954, Egyptian archaeologists discovered and excavated the first Khufu Sun Ship on the south side of Khufu's Pyramid. In 1982, the SunShip Museum was inaugurated and opened to the public near the site of its excavation. In August 2021, the sun ship that buried the ancient Egyptian pharaoh Khufu was moved from its old site to the Great Egyptian Museum. Vaziri said the sunship was "one of the oldest large-scale wooden artifacts in human history" and that the museum's site was demolished because it obscured the panorama of the Pyramid of Khufu and would be exhibited in a special exhibition hall after it was moved to the Great Egyptian Museum.
