East China Normal University launched the "Great River Delta Plan"
The full name of the Mega-Delta Programme is "The Great River Delta: Finding Solutions to Sustainability Problems." The plan relies on the international project "Future Earth Coasts (FEC)" to establish the "Great River Delta Working Group", which aims to better protect the human living environment in the Great River Delta region and reconstruct the development blueprint of the delta region according to the type and severity of the challenges they face in the context of global change, through multidisciplinary and multi-sectoral collaboration.
Deltas involved in the Grand River Delta program
The current program is led by the State Key Laboratory of Estuarine Coastal Science, leading scientists from 11 countries to conduct joint research in 15 major river deltas. With the implementation of the plan, more deltas will be included in the future and attract more departments such as scientific research, management, and enterprises.
The Grand River Delta Project stood out from the first batch of more than 240 projects, reflecting the importance of the Delta as a meeting point for land-sea interactions and the universality of the problems it faces, as well as the leading position and international influence of the State Key Laboratory of Estuarine Coastal Science in the field of global delta research. In the next ten years, the "Great River Delta Plan" will actively publicize the "Ocean Decade", promote the in-depth participation of relevant institutions at home and abroad, tell the story of China in delta research and governance, and show China's willingness and contribution to the innovation of marine science and technology and the sustainable development of the ocean.
United Nations Decade of the Oceans
In order to effectively respond to the severe challenges facing the decline of global ocean health and sustainable human development, the United Nations has decided to launch the "Ocean Decade" plan from 2021, which is one of the most important marine science initiatives under the framework of the United Nations in recent years, which aims to deeply intersect natural sciences and humanities through the participation of various organizations and individuals such as UN organizations, governments, universities and scientific research institutions and enterprises, to produce the knowledge and technology needed for sustainable social development, and to transform them into global ocean governance.
As one of the important actions of the "Ocean Decade" plan, in 2021 the United Nations launched the collection of the first global action plans. The action plan is divided into four categories: "Programme", "Project", "Activity" and "Contribution", of which "Plan" is positioned as a global or regional action to complete one or more of the "Ocean Decade" challenges, with long-term, comprehensive cross-cutting characteristics, often including several projects and activities.
