"A water embraces the city", water is the soul of Guilin.
From the map, Guilin is located in the northeast of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and the Li River flows through it. The Xiang River and the Li River flow in parallel, and the nearest point is only a few kilometers, and the Lingqu skillfully communicates the two major rivers and opens up the Yangtze River and pearl river basins.
"The river is a green belt, and the mountains are like jade hairpins", the Tang Dynasty poet Han Yu once wrote a poem describing the beautiful natural scenery of the Li River. As the business card of Guangxi and even China's landscape, the Li River can be called the symbol and soul of "Guilin Landscape Jia Tianxia".
The Li River flows through Guilin, Yangshuo and other places, and is the most typical section of karst topography. The satellite overlooks the landscape of Guilin, full of karst lone peaks, and the Li River resembles a green belt, winding between the 10,000-point qi peaks.

Protect the ecology And paint the Li River
Surrounded by mountains and rivers, cities and rivers are closely related, but environmental problems have cast a shadow over the green mountains and waters here. Decades ago, due to sand quarrying, indiscriminate logging, industrial wastewater and domestic sewage discharge, the environment along the Li River suffered different degrees of damage.
Located in the upper reaches of the Li River, Qingshitan Reservoir is one of the most important water sources of the Li River.

However, since 2000, pieces of cages have appeared uncontrollably on the surface of the reservoir area, and pig breeding around the reservoir has also developed in large quantities, affecting the water quality of the reservoir. In April 2013, the Guilin Municipal Environmental Protection Department found that the total phosphorus and nitrogen of the reservoir exceeded the standard, and the eutrophication trend of water quality was serious, and the "lifeline" of the people of Guilin was urgent.
Since 2019, the Qingshitan Reservoir has opened a green transformation, rare fungus planting has replaced pig breeding, and 322 polluted farms within 500 meters of the reservoir area have been demolished. After treatment, the water quality of Qingshitan Reservoir has been optimized and maintained in class I water quality from the previous inferior five types of water quality. The effectiveness of governance is evident on the remote sensing monitoring map.
Water quality problems have also plagued the Huixian Wetland, known as the "Kidney of the Li River".
Huixian Wetland has an underground river system of more than 100 square kilometers, and the tributaries of the Li River basin converge here through underground rivers. Due to the barrier of underground shale, the flow of underground rivers is blocked, and a large area of wetlands is formed, which plays an important role in the water purification and water source replenishment of the Li River system.
With the development of the economy, the local population has increased sharply, the people have encroached on reclamation, opened up land, built ponds around lakes, crowded rivers, and the area of wetlands has decreased sharply, and once became a black and smelly water body.
Since 2019, Huixian Town has carried out a series of environmental remediation projects. As of September 2020, the water quality in all monitoring points of Huixian Wetland has reached more than three standards, and the ecological function of the wetland has been restored. Today's Huixian Wetland has restored the beautiful scenery of the former Taoyuan where reeds are leisurely, insects are ringing in the ears, and egrets are fluttering.

At present, the water quality of the national examination section of the main stream of the Li River has reached the national surface water quality standard of Class II all year round, and Guilin ranks second in the country in the 2020 national surface water assessment section water quality ranking of cities at the prefecture level and above released by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment.
