Tasmania, an island off the southeast coast of Australia. Separated from the continent by a wide area (128-240 km wide from north to south), the Bass Strait. The island is considered a mainland island in origin, forming a state of the Australian Commonwealth with its surrounding islets. The area is more than 68,000 square kilometers. The 146°51′E meridian at the southern tip of the island is the dividing line between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The territory is a plateau (1617 meters above sea level) covered by forests and alpine meadows. Dairy animal husbandry and horticulture are well developed. The island was discovered in 1642 by A.J. Tasman. The island is mountainous and has a humid climate with a temperate oceanic climate. The island is rich in natural resources such as lead, zinc, copper, forests and hydropower. Dairy animal husbandry and orchard industry are well developed. Industries are based on hydropower, zinc smelting, papermaking, cement and agricultural processing.
