It is a kind of muppet performance that originated in Quanzhou in the 17th century. In the early days, the cloth bag play was performed in the costume of the puppets, and in the early days, when the temple was greeted, the cloth bag play was one of the most commonly seen folk opera performances.

However, as far as the traditional cloth bag drama that is now familiar is concerned, the origin of the play is generally a mythical story from Quanzhou.

In the mid-17th century, the cloth bag drama was quite popular in southern Fujian, and a similar pattern of shoulder play appeared. The so-called shoulder play is the performer shoulder the box and stage. After reaching a certain location, after setting up a simple stage, the manipulator hides under the cloth curtain, and the simple wooden stage on the shoulder becomes a puppet performance stage. By the 18th century, depending on the performance venue, budai opera not only appeared in professional groups, but also divided into outdoor stage plays and inner stage plays performed in theaters, depending on the performance location. Among them, the wild stage opera is a performance that the drama class was invited to perform in various places, and later gradually became a performance for the purpose of greeting the gods and thanking the gods for their birthday, the set is relatively simple, and the performers are fewer.
Although the inner stage opera performance method appeared in the 18th century, it really prevailed after the 20th century. The inner stage drama set is more gorgeous, and there are more puppets and music performers than the wild stage plays. Generally speaking, the inner stage drama of the cloth bag drama is performed in the same way as the general indoor drama, except that the stage protagonist changes from a real person to a puppet. However, because the inner stage opera and Peking opera, the film performance method overlaps, and the entertainment effect cannot be compared, after the 1980s, except for a few exceptions, the inner stage opera has been quite rare in southern Fujian and all over Taiwan.
After the 1960s, the inner stage drama also developed this branch of the TV bag drama. This kind of cloth bag drama that was set up on a television studio and performed in the studio not only became popular in Taiwan after the war, causing a sensation. The medium and venue of the performance even extended to cable television, videotape, film, CD and multimedia after the 1990s.
