At the time, ETOnline reported on the photo, from the staff to the editor, entirely female, giving Brinkley Cook and the other models full control as art directors, choosing the words painted on them. For her photographs, Brinkley-Cook chose words like "artist" and "nature."
But shortly after Brinkley-Cook stripped naked over the issue, she had to respond to cyber bullies who claimed she was objectifying herself.
The Sports Illustrated swimwear issue has also drawn backlash from those who mocked the magazine's attempts to empower women by making them pose naked.
"It hurt my heart to hear strong opposition to the In Her Own Words project," Brinkley-Cook wrote on Instagram at the time. "To know the world we're in, if a woman chooses to embrace her body, strip naked and pose forcefully, and she's told she's objectifying herself, it not only makes me uncomfortable, but makes me really feel the need to say what I mean."

The star further explained: "For me and other girls who choose to participate, this project is about taking back our power. In an industry where models have little say, the content they are used to create, and having complete self-control and creative control during IHOW shooting is true, unbridled self-empowerment. ”
Brinkley-Cook stressed that the project is significant because it involves a group of women sharing important information about talking to them personally. She also added that no one was forced to shoot naked.
"If someone doesn't want to shoot that day and feels too emotional and we all have coffee and talk the next day, she'll come back," she said. "If someone pulls out, everything is fine and we understand how exciting it is to not only take off our clothes but also the armor that we all get from external criticism." The aim of this project is to make women feel strong. That's that. ”
Brinkley-Cook even admits that growing up, she struggled with insecurities.
