Take stock of the geographical islands of Asia
Sulawesi, formerly known as Celebes, is a large island in central Indonesia, one of the four main islands of the Sunda Archipelago, located in central Indonesia, in the southern Philippines. The Philippine Archipelago to the north, Flores and Timor to the south, Kaliman to the west, and the Maluku Archipelago to the east, are the 11th largest island in the world. With a total land area of 174,600 km2, it ranks fourth in terms of area and third in population among Indonesia's five largest islands. Sulawesi is a strangely shaped island, resembling a capital letter "K", jutting out of four peninsulas to the northeast, east, southeast and south. With many high mountains and deep valleys and few plains, it is the island with the largest proportion of mountainous area in Indonesia.
