Comrade Qi Huaiyuan passed away

Beijing, 28 Jan (Xinhua) -- Qi Huaiyuan, former director of the Foreign Affairs Office of the State Council, former president of the Chinese Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and secretary of the party leading group, died in Beijing on January 14, 2022 at the age of 92 due to illness.

After the death of Comrade Qi Huaiyuan, the relevant leading comrades of the central authorities expressed their condolences in different ways and expressed their condolences to their relatives.

Qi Huaiyuan, born in January 1930, is a native of Ezhou, Hubei Province. He joined the revolutionary work in July 1948 and joined the Communist Party of China in November of the same year. From September 1950, he successively served as the third secretary and second secretary of the Chinese Embassy in the GDR. From May 1969 to June 1971, he worked in the "May 7" cadre school. From July to December 1971, he worked in the Chinese Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries. From December 1971 to August 1984, he successively served as Director General of the Soviet-European Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, First Secretary and Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in the GDR, Minister Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in the Federal Republic of Germany, and Director General of the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In August 1984, he was appointed Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and a member of the Party Committee. In February 1986, he was appointed Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and Member of the Party Committee. In June 1991, he was appointed Secretary-General of the Central Leading Group for Foreign Affairs. In August 1991, he was appointed director of the Foreign Affairs Office of the State Council (in May 1994, he also served as the president and secretary of the party group of the Chinese Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries). In May 1998, he was appointed president and secretary of the party group of the Chinese Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries. He retired in January 2004.

Qi Huaiyuan is an alternate member of the 13th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, a member of the 14th Central Committee, a standing member of the Ninth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and a vice chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee.
